I'm in love with Tal

what I do enjoy in all the youtube vids I've seen of her is that excitement and obvious pleasure she has playing and making music.

Her enthusiasm is contagious. People respond to that, and it's not something I see from a lot of the other pros. I did see it in this kid http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kPwPuS7ZXFowho is obviously so happy to be playing that bass. I love it. It brings some excitement to bass. When most non-bassists consider bass to be BORING and even UNNECESSARY, players who bring some excitement and enthusiasm are only helping the rest of us gain some respect.

I'm getting so tired of everyone looking at everyone as male, female, black, white... so much stereotyping and predjudice... when are we going to all realize that we're all the same. we're bass players.

Joe i've been preaching this for years. Seriously, I got tired of it years ago, the sad thing is this stuff exists and I doubt it will EVER completly go away. I hate "PC" bs.

BTW, if someone told me they thought I sounded like an "old black guy" i would take that as a huge compliment.

That kid is the same one that folks were accusing of not knowing any theory. I say maybe he has some learn some maybe he has not, (although given his Dad and Uncle, Butch Ramsey & Andrew Gouche, I suspect he has been taking some great lessons)
the bottom line is that the kid has clearly put in some time and has gotten very good very young. I really think precocious players bring out insecurity in many older players. I can see why, I often run into kids who can play me under the table! That said, I try to be happy for them. Life is too short for jealousy.

BTW, don't push the "old Black guy" thing too much. There are lots of mediocre older Black players, myself included.

Is it not obvious that she has a marketing and pr machine behind her? How do you think the "uninformed morning show schmuck" knows about her? C'mon man, you can't be that naive. Compare her to say Janek Gwizdala, "uninformed morning show schmuck" is not proclaiming him to be the future of something or maybe I missed that show or maybe she's playing at a higher level than him or others?

A jazzer from NYC isn't going to get much notice in their hometown - which is full of top notch players.

However, the girl from Australia making it big in the states probably will make a "human interest" story on TV down under. Surely even you can see the difference? I've been on one of those morning shows, too - does that mean I have a marketing machine behind me? (And I was in a major market - the biggest in the south, in fact....)

Tal doesn't sound like Nathan East.

In my original quote, I cited Nathan East more as an example of a great grooving bassist as opposed to his particular sound. Thinking back to a few Nathan East interviews, he stated that he tries to avoid an identifiable sound so that he can work in the widest variety of situations. I know on the Chinese Wall CD with Phillip Bailey, he did some fretless work than slightly reminds me of the sound that Tal gets but I think your point about their sound not being similar is accurate.

His that one needs a boutique bass to really sound good playing very nuanced music is an opinion that is debatable I do believe. He did say something like that, no?

I asked him about that one time and said how much better John Pattitucci's tone was with a Ken Smith than his Yamaha. I think both basses are fine instruments, and JP still sounds great, but I am sure that my ear is no match for Gwizdala's.

I mean that too. Anybody that good is surely hearing lots of things I miss or don't even know to look for.

It was a group I was playing with, but you miss the point. We asked, they said "sure" - just like Tal. It's not hard to get on those shows.

She'll STILL be playing up a storm 30 years from now when she's not the "cute girl bass player" anymore!

I never saw the big deal either. Cute? Meh, in a Plain Jane sort of way. Solid bassist for sure.

My sentiments as well. Good solid player, especially considering her age. Nothing special. She has a special appeal because she is: a) Female b) Young.

A rare combo in the bass world and highly marketable I would imagine.

First post, cool! I've been reading a lot on these boards but never posted anything.

I think everyone is correct about Tal, everyone is arguing different points but it all leads to the same thing. Is she better than most people who plays bass? yeah. Is she as good as many bass virtuosos out there? No. I guess she'd be right in the middle.
I'd say shes an average jazz player and an above average musician in general. But shes young maybe shed wow us in the future.

She probably doesn't deserve a solo CD so young into her career,
but it works out for everyone. Now I have a CD filled with very learnable Jazz material that sounds pretty awesome, I can take some time and learn it fairly easily.
