I'm in multiple bands. BL's getting testy about it. Advise, please.

WHAT ?

All of this time I thought the "problem" was with the B.L. that can only play in C
and HIS problem with you being in the Partridge family band, thus not being exclusive and available to his bogus self.

Now we find out you got a guitard with"allergy"problems {hint hint, wink wink, say no more} ?

I am in shock, and disbelief that you would even consider mucking with these douchebags.
Guitard not withstanding, there is no way I would deal with this idiot.

Naw. I mentioned the keybaord player as an "oh, btw, he's not very good". Once I put my foot down after reading most of the early replys he completely backed down. BTW, on a side note, the now gone guitar player, during the post gig meeting brought up my commitment again regarding the other band and I shut him down. He was really starting to piss all of us off, even the drummer that brought him in.

You could say that this thread gave me the fodder from which to address the OP issue and the guitar player became the new issue that, truth be told, was actually part of the problem up front, but in a sort of subliminal way.

BTW, the BL and his wife are a couple that my wife and I are now officially very good friends with, outside of the band. They are our "type" of people. The guitar player was, in a very real way, like a character out of Deliverance. I wasn't holding that against him, but I think he was holding against me who I am. There was a bit of a "resentment of the rich" thing going on, even though I'm solid middle class by Seattle standards, but "rich" compared to a lot of the folks I rub shoulders with around here. Most of them know me well and we get along great, but every now and again...

And this guitar player was only in the band for about two rehearsals and two gigs. It took that long for him to morph from "new employee" to the "real him".

Sometimes you have to take a hit so the rest of your band can succeed.

That would not even cover expenses, so in a way...

I'm with you on that one. But you have to understand the economics around here in these dry counties. These places charge $5 to get in, sell bags of chips and cheap hot dogs for a dollar and a chili dog for $1.25. The band gets half of the door.

This gives you an idea of how much the club gets. If you could see these places and the crowds you would laugh yourself silly. But I really enjoy it and will keep doing it until I don't. The crowds are amazingly appreciative.

BTW, one of these places feels more like a bar. There is a lady at a "bar" selling bags of chips and soft drinks, but she mostly sleeps while people go through a door on the other side of the club that is an entrance to a "private" area. It gets a LOT of traffic...

In some very real ways, when I play these clubs I feel like it is 1959. It's part of the charm.

I used to say, on another musician site, that being in a rock/country band nowadays is like being on a softball team in the late 20th century. Neither pays much, nor are most in it for the money.
And, truth be told, most aren't worth much money.

Around here some AMAZING bluegrass pickers spend most of their "performance time" at senior centers.

The problem with the NYE gig is, if the bass player does not show, unless you have a good lefthanded keyboard player, the whole band stays home.
If you get a sub and that sub really wants to play, then you could get out of a gig with the adult band once the sub becomes cohesive with the adult band.
I would say quit the adult band and put your effort and time in the Partidge family band, you might even get a TV show... :)

If I just narcissistically did whatever the heck I wanted, that is exactly what I would do. The adult band has become more of a charity case for me. They'll never be very good. I wish I saw it before I joined. You learn a bit more with every experience.

The hardest part for me is being discriminating, but I AM getting better. It takes experience to see this stuff before it's obvious.
