I'm letting my Bass Player subscription lapse.

I like the idea of having a SUB-scription to a magazine reporting on low frequencies.

I was around back when Guitar Player diversified into Bass Player. It was a satisfying read for about two decades. Then it started getting slimmer and slimmer, with ads taking up more and more space. Interviews got dumber, gear reviews got blander, never really saying anything that would nettle advertisers. I've given up on BP.

They keep killing the only parts i like. First it was bobby vegas page which was awesome. Then they replaced it with "the one" which was pretty cool. Now it is basically ads for boutique builders masquerading as interviews.

The only thing I currently like is the 1-2 page profiles of bassists that includes their gear profile. I like seeing what strings people use. I flip through those, check out what bass is being reviewed. Usually hits the recycling bin in less than 5 mins.

There must have been 2 covers...a la The Swimsuit issue lol.

Geddy is also the Premiere issue, as I have it shrouded in plastic. You may recall, BP was Bi-monthly back then. They may have had Sheehan the second of the two months, etc.

but, save some trees.


Magazines are an antiquated, wasteful medium for information.

I'm doing the complete oppisite: spending less time on talkbass.com and instead reading BassPlayer magazine. Mainly because BP has interviews witn real sctual bass players and the gear reviews are by real actual bass players and the columns are written by real actual bass players and also I love the transcriptions and lesson examples, especially when there's no annoying tab.
