I'm officially boycotting Guitar Center

I can't remember the last time I went into a music store for anything. I buy my strings online, I get my basses, amps and cabinets from fellow TBers or through networking with other musicians. Music stores suck for a whole host of reasons, being ripped off and treated like a peasant if you're not on tour and waving a wad of cash are just a couple.

NEW YORK, June 12 (Reuters-BUYOUTS)-Standard & Poor's cut its debt rating on Bain Capital-owned Guitar Center Holdings Inc late last month, as the music retailer purchased during the height of the 2007 buyout boom struggles with "weak operating trends." The corporate credit rating on the Westlake Village, Calif.-based company dropped to 'CCC+' from 'B-'.
I just wanted to say that until March of this year, I worked in the building next door to GC headquarters in Westalke Village. Not that it matters to this thread.

I shop at Guitar Center. I shop at Sweetwater. I shop online. I compare prices, and it depends on how much time I have available, and what I am buying. There aren't a lot of "mom and pop" stores around here, and they don't have a lot of selection. As for strings, there's only one place I buy those, and it's right in my sig line.

I didn't read every post, so maybe someone said it before me, but when I check to see if a store has something and I'm going to go in to buy it I ask for the name of the person I'm talking to, how much the item is, and if they can hold it behind the counter for me. And that's not just music equipment. If the OP had done this, he would have found out that they didn't have the part. Or they did have the part, but the person who waited on him in person was too stupid or too lazy to find it.

Idunno. Overall, my experience with them has been far from the nightmares so many people seem to have. I do think that charging to set up an instrument being purchased from them is absolutely, patently ridiculous, and when I picked up a hollowbody electric guitar a few years ago, I set it up myself to avoid that. And I tried to buy a Korg MS-20 mini from them, but they had only the floor model in stock and offered a laughably small "discount." So I bought one from a west coast dealer for $100 less, free shipping, no sales tax. That's GC's fault for poor inventory choices.

But I've walked out of there with cables, some books, other synths (Volca Beats, KeyLab controller, etc), and pedals. For whatever reason, they priced a new-looking BP-355 at $60. And a local guy makes pedals and sells them to the store, so I nailed a Flying Pan clone for $100.

And amazingly enough, there are a handful of staff who have been there for a few years. Compared to some other replies, it sounds like I've been a lucky duck, which is especially good because my local shop has so little inventory that I couldn't buy anything from them when I was looking for a new 4-string. Though once upon a time, they had this Ibanez ATK305 with OBP2 installed at a good price...and it came home with me.

You would make an absolutely horrid businessman. By not doing a little legwork for me they closed the door on me ever buying an amp or guitar there. They also ensured that I suggest anywhere BUT Guitar Center to new musicians

Wow. I guess you told me. I'll just take solace in the fact that it is highly unlikely that you will ever be a customer of mine. :D

Somehow I doubt GC will miss you or be hurt by your anti-recommendations.

Do you? Well they are hurting. Not entirely sure if you've been paying attention but Guitar Center is in some serious debt and closing in on bankruptcy. Partially due to my 'anti-recommendations' and the 'anti-recommendations' of the thousands of dissatisfied customers. However you can go ahead and keep telling yourself that Guitar Center is a thriving business.
