I'm doing the 1-3-5 Triads through the C Major Scale.

C = Major 1-3-5
D = Minor 1-3-5
E = Minor 1-3-5
F = Major 1-3-5

Etc.

Would posting stuff to Youtube help, or is it just gonna be confusing because it is out of sync?

Defintely on the Youtube vids. I don't know what's causing the sound to be out of whack but it only happens on some vids, so that would definitely be great. And I'd really like to see the I-IV-V clip.

Well your major triad would be G, B, D, and F# if you want the seventh. But wouldn't what you play still be determined by the chord progression?

Yes, but understanding the key would give you some idea of the chords and progressions of the song.

Hmmm...I don't know. I think I understand intervals pretty well now, and triads. Or at least triads within a major key, we haven't really touched on minor keys yet.

I don't know I do feel like I'm missing something...When you're playing a progression, say the I-IV-V, is it absolutely necessary to stay within the triads of those three notes, or can you step outside a bit as long as you stay in key?

I'm honestly not sure where I'm at right now. I think I need to practice on some examples or something to sort of firmly get what we've been going over.

Yes, we have. That what's so cool. You are closer than you think to understanding basic theory. What is the relative minor key of C Major? A Minor, right? Boom! You know a minor key now!

No, but those are the core notes. In those last two videos I posted I was playing mostly triads, but I also used octaves and a few other notes. I could have throw any notes from the scale in there. I also used some "passing tones" in the I-IV-V clip.

About the minor key. Go back and look at that picture I posted that showed all the chords for the Key of C. You will notice that all the same notes & chords apply to the Key of A Minor. They are linked because they use the same notes. That is why it is called the relative minor. When you learn a major key you learn a minor key at the same time!

Look at the The Minor Pentatonic Scale on top.

Now look at the The Blues Scale below it. Do you see that extra note? It's not in the key but it sounds good. It's a passing tone.

In all seriousness, I have to say this is the best thread. I think I've participated in. I'm thoroughly enjoying the conversation and learning alot too. And judging by at least one other poster, I think this is a great thread overall for beginners.

I just started glancing through Wheat's book after I started this thread. I haven't read alot in (mostly because I've been thoroughly engrossed here), but it looks like a great book. And of course, the price is great.
