That's actually not the case. I returned a cab to GC once with a blown horn (I wonder how it got blown in the first place?); the cab I received as a replacement was the exact same cab I had returned.

Of course, if you drop it, damage it, suffer any user caused issue, the return option goes bye-bye.
This is also a great solution. You can pickup a BassDriver for $100-$125 used, or just grab a new one. It'll be a great addition to your arsenal.
Right now it is no interest for 4 years on Ampeg and several other bass heads. The deal goes until Dec 31
People need to get out of living in a dream world - every piece of gear that gets returned is going to be resold. Music stores aren't in business to coddle you, they're in business to move gear. I'm sure any and all of us have at one time or another received "used," let's call it "demoed," gear unwittingly. So if you buy online thinking you are getting pristine from the factory, that is not always the case.

If it were me I'd get a cheap head. I recall seeing an older GK head for like 200 bucks at Sam Ash. That price range would still let you have some of your emergency money in reserve. Otherwise, if I knew the local bands on the bill I'd ask one of them to see if you can borrow their head.
Somebody may have already said this, but Sweetwater is offering a 48 month 0% financing deal right now, so basically you get four years to pay it off if you buy something from them. If you think you can swing 10 bucks a month for the next four years, I'd order something from them. I live in Cincinnati, and they usually get stuff to me within 36 hours of my ordering it.
That's the point some are trying to make.....with all the "free rental" buyers, it's very common to get new gear that's actually been used (and maybe abused) by an unscrupulous buyer
Doubt that you'll go to hell for sticking your fellow bassists with slightly used gear sold as "new". But you may be reincarnated as a really bad drummer.
Anyone remember the day when you had a good relationship with a music store and they offered to let you try an amp by taking it to a show ? I mean, really. An amp that any of you buy is already tested for hours before you get your hands on it.

Same, here. Mahoney's Drum Shop in Las Vegas offered that to me more than once. If you go into any music store and say , "I need to check this amp at a show before knowing if I like it." Only an idiot would argue with you about that. Secondly, who's to say that same music store wouldn't have gained a loyal customer after the fact ?
With NEW gear? Never. Ever. I'm really curious as to what piece of new equipment a music store allowed you to try out on a gig, and when "the day" was. And I'm sure we'd all like to know the name of the store, because clearly they are awesome and deserve the business of any TBers in their area, if they're still in business!
It's called marketing. Getting a product into a customers hands. Also , see above. It's a way to sell gear. Let me clarify, it wouldn't be for free. I'd still have to pay for it, but taking it back was a no hassle situation. I would also like to mention that I never did that but if I had a big gig coming up and had no other options because I got screwed on a used deal, I'd do it. Sure, I'd feel a little guilty but I'd make up for it some how. Maybe buying my next amp from them or being a more loyal customer. I'd also treat the amp like a dozen eggs.

Get a DI pedal like a Sansamp and run it straight into the board. I carried one in my gig bag for years as a back-up to my bass rig.
Yes I do. And sometimes I buy the piece, other times I return it in as-borrowed condition when I realize that it didn't perform the way I had hoped. Helps to have a good personal relationship with the owner and his employees, and it helps to be trustworthy and careful.

Go to the local store, explain your situation, and see what they will do for you. They might have something to rent, or might have something in back to sell cheap, considering where you are.
