In-Ear Monitors???

Why won't this work? Soundmen talk (& play click tracks/sequenced tracks) to the band thru just the monitors all the time. Yes my ideas will have to be set up as a sidewash or foldback, but it shouldn't overpower the FOH. A click track is played in the monitors only (usually just the drummers) & a sequenced track in both FOH & monitors.

I guess it depends on the size of the monitors, where the bassist is standing and the size of the room. If it's a wedding there's a good chance that there will be people close enough to the stage that they would be able to hear what's coming out of the bassist's monitor if he is up front (as I usually am at such gigs).

If they can supply a 1/4" line feed you could get a RockOn system...it's a wired system
and works great. I have one on my pedal board and use the UM2 ear pieces. I love it and have been using it for about 3 years glitch free...it always works and sounds good.
It's a wired system and it doesn't accept XLR input connectors..only 1/4" so check with them
for connection compatibility. The RockOn guy is very cool and will get it to you fast. Set up is a breeze and it's noise free and requires no batteries.

I also know guys who use the Rolls IEM amp ...it's inexpensive and it works. Also a wired rig.


I also use a rack mounted Shure PSM600 for my wireless IEM system...same UM2 earpieces but the PSM600 accepts XLR input and is wireless, which covers me for any IEM situation I might encounter. Works great. It's an old system so they probably have a newer version of it now...but they are pricey. The old 600 is a tried and true workhorse...bought mine used so that is a good indicator of how robust they are. I read somewhere that the Stones used to use them when they were current so, if so, there you go...if it's good enuff for Mick then rock on.

I highly recommend the RockOn system if you are ok with a wired system. Get the proprietary cable he sells if you get the system...it makes it easy.

either way you're gonna have to spend some money. but you'll be set up for down the road!

I've been ampless for the last 6 or so years and never looked back. Both my last band and my church have been using in-ears for years and I feel like that's the future. Now I got used to it so much, I can't imagine playing without in-ear mix. I used Shures for some time, but for the last few months I've been using Meelectronics M6 Pro and I'm really happy with the sound they produce. I will tell you a secret, but promise not to share with anybody - you don't have to have the most expensive gear to have good results :) Yeah, 8-driver customs will sound better, but for only $50 you will get a darn good solution with amazing warranty(how 'bout lifetime replacement for only 50%?). Don't believe me - go to head-fi!

For most applications my band only runs vocals through the monitor mix so I have one earpiece in and an Alpine Sound earplug in the other (to save what's left of my hearing!). These were especially appealing not just based on the the reviews sonically but the removable cables.

Are there any songs that require the bass to play solo for a period of time? If not you can just follow the drummer. My band has several songs with backing tracks and click only going to the drummer and I just follow him with no iems. Even if there are songs with breaks have him keep the hi hat going to the click. Don't think I would bother with iems for a sub gig ymmv

Carvin wireless monitors, westone 30s, 2 xlr to 1/4 cables, lotsa AA batteries. More than $600 but in the 12 months it's been since I crossed over to the in-ears game, my singing has gotten better and my ears don't pound from loud stage volume.

You take a sub gig, the band provides monitors. .... period. If they don't have in-ears they can provide you with a wedge to keep up with keys for one night.

All I do these days is sub gigs. I have subbed for national (albeit up and comers) acts, local acts, regional acts, and acts that just happened to be swinging down the east coast. I have done a lot of sub gigs. I have never ever had any act even imply that I should bring my own monitor system, in ears or otherwise. I certainly have used my buds with their in early system.

If they stipulate you have to spend $600 for a piece of equipment so you can play with them one weekend, tell them to pound sand.

That's really cool! I like the idea of a digital console and bluetooth replacing UHF wireless receivers! It's expensive but pretty cool.
