the bass mute; i have one, great device w/ one major problem; it mutes sideways which means side pressure and takes your bass slightly out of tune.

)Walter, yes, I set the witness point a little better after I took the pictures. Yes, it is a rails guitar pickup, because as set forth in the entire mods thread, : Squier VM Tele Bass Mods (Including Added Mute) | TalkBass.com , I couldn't get an end-to-end or split-coil '51 style pickup in the narrowed string spacing, and physically a vintage spec '51 pickup is larger than the pickup rout, and I don't play single coils on stage. I just don't. I advocate using rails type Strat humbuckers to upgrade MusicMaster and Bronco pickups, and I put my money where my mouth is. I watch Strat players give sound men fits; I will be as quiet as possible. I have tried parallel wiring on other basses and guitars numerous times over the last four and a half decades, and no, I don't like the tone. The baritone switch setting does that very well for this bass. Thanks for your reply!nice!
A "duncan designed" guitar pickup i see; have you tried in in parallel vs series to see how that works for bass? As for the mute, I could see where typically stiffer flats might be less pushed sharp by the mute. (looks like you need to set the witness point on that E string though, it's curving up off the saddle
That’s funny!! I did a search for the Jaguar mute this weekend and wound up bookmarking this EXACT page to reference when my stuff gets here. I even ordered it from Darrin because of your page! Thanks a million for posting it because I don’t know that I’d have the guts to try to install one without having seen how you did it.
I've tried every mute system there is. The Nordy mutes too much IMO, makes the tone completely dead and useless. Anything under the strings causes intonation problems. The "bass mute" by elio martinez uses side pressure and in position 2 and 3 sharpens your notes due to side pressure, but I use it on my fretless ibanez srh500 in position 1 for upright tone and it works. The only mute that sounds correct to me, and does not cause intonation problems, is the original fender bridge ashtray cover with the mute adhered to the underside so it rests on top of the strings. It mutes slightly ala jamerson/kaye and you can still hear the note. Carole Kaye used to tape her mute on top of the strings. It's physics.

The hole hosts the pinpoint and spring. Where do you put them otherwise? THe spring pushes the muts away from the body. Screws hold it into place.
the best mute, and the only one that will not make your bass notes sharp, is the old ashtray cover that sits over the bridge, and the mute (window door seal) presses down on the strings at the bridge saddles. The jag mute and "the bass mute" will make your notes sharp. Soft foam underneath won't , but a hard foam will, and the nano mute sucks all the tone out of the strings IMO.
