Apart from all the common names I quite like Dick Lovgren's (bassist for Meshuggah) jazz band, Nica Group. Really nice, contemporary instrumental jazz, far, far removed from the kind of music he does in Meshuggah.

Yep! I took lessons in his old house back when he first moved to Houston up until a few months after they got signed to Prosthetic. I got to see the two 6 strings that he built himself, his old Conklin, and the first two 8 strings that he got built from Sherman.

Awesome!!! Now please excuse me while I go listen to Carving Desert Canyons...

Did anyone mention Gordian Knot yet? Not as good as Cynic's stuff, but they're still awesome, and, unlike Cynic, are almost entirely instrumental. Sean Malone is ridiculously awesome.
