interested in power conditioners. any suggestions?

What do you mean 'let me' test the power. I don't ask. I plug in and my outlet tester is ALREADY testing. And yes, I've told sound engineers when the power isn't wired correctly and made them run a different line from a different location. I've also told them when something was lifted and the mics were causing shocks, because only an idiot will knowingly play that way.

I've been working this way for DECADES and have never had a 'club owner' say boo about anything.

You know what's tacky? Getting killed because of bad wiring in a club.

Why would some one trust a tacky ass 8$ surge protector with thousands of dollars of equipment. That device's appearance is a good indicator of how reliable it is. Plug into to it. I'll plug into a monster surge protector / electric filter/ snake science/ etc......

In addition to a plug-in circuit tester, multimeter and surge protectors, I also carry one of these GFIs for every outlet my rig and/or PA rack plugs into:

I'd rather spend $15 dollars on items that could protect my equipment and SAVE MY LIFE, than spend $200 on something that "conditions" the line current.

Oh, and if any bar owner/promoter/soundman ever gave me crap about testing (or complaining about) the power supplied to the band...I'd point to the paragraph in my contract that deals with adequate electrical power and safety.

I'd asked about this in some other thread that died off but several people claim these things help with noise, so, what would they have in them that your gear doesn't? Some little few dollar filter on the line that should be built in the amp anyway? Do that and there'd be no need for all this conditioning nonsense. Similair to the little filter you put on car radio's power wire so it doesn't pick up from the spark plugs.

Your opinion on the "power conditioner" has been clear many times.
On the other thread i believe someone did link a filter type used in these black boxes? I saw no need to argue the point as you are firm in your belief. If you really want to know what is built into the power supplies of equipment (and it is not much at all, if anything) do the research. Equipment manufacturers should build in pre-filters in the event the equipment maybe plugged into the same circuit as faulty motors, ballasts, dimmers, fans, SMPS like for laptops, some TV's or even a faulty satellite receiver?

Why does your car stereo need a power filter? At least that application has fewer sources and types of noise.

I dunno, maybe because I've been gigging since the mid 70s and have a couple of graduate degrees in engineering and found those tacky strips to work just fine w/my McIntosh stereo rig at home as well as my bass rigs

Don't make engineering decisions with your eyes or the price tag. Get to the root of the issue and find the right tool at a good price. If you want to spend or use more than what's truly needed that's fine but I guarantee I wouldn't hire you to work for me

Why not? If you're allowed to plug any of your equipment into the outlet, why can't you just plug a tester in first? I've played hundreds of gigs and never had anyone come and ask me what I was doing, or that I couldn't check.

1. Looks tacky? I'll go out on a limb and say that the majority of gigging musicians use that over a "power conditioner"
2. What "messing around with outlets" is there? Can you plug gear into an outlet without a supervisor? If you can, you can test an outlet.
3. If you're under the influence before you even set up for the gig, that's tacky.

I betcha the guys in this thread have gigged for decades more than you. You know, we've never lost a gig because I told a club their stage power was dangerous. In fact, one of the places I did it to has hired us repeatedly and now they've taped over the bad outlets so no one else gets hurt either.

If you're plugging in drunk at soundcheck, that's probably a more likely cause of being sacked from a club's lineup.
