Oh, man, the interwebs has some great stuff.
There was a PC game about 10 years ago called "Rock Manager". At the end of the game, you get to hire the musicians of your choice and record a song. I would always pick the death metal singer and have him record the sappy country ballad. "You don't have to be ashamed, baby / Of mispronouncing my name, baby / You don't have to do the time, and if there really is a crime, I'm the one...TO BLAAAAMMMMMEEEE!"

I'm late to the party and looks like it has wound down. I usually hang out over on the DB side of TB and just found this set of threads. I spent the last two weeks reading through them. I just okayed the proofread manuscript of Chasing the Last Whale, so next it'll be typeset, and after Tim finishes the cover design, it'll be ready for purchase as either a trade paperback or an e-book.
The novel allows me to expand on everything I've spoken about here, because it's TOTAL FICTION, you see. In the novel, I MADE IT ALL UP.

I'm ashamed to admit that I didn't know anything about Slim Whitman except for the song "Indian Love Call," which made the Martians' heads explode in the movie Mars Attacks.

There was a shakeup at the publishing house, and now my book is listed as "available in July." Maybe they're going to actually try and market it now.
My first publicist turns out to have been a very bad fit, so I hired a second publicist who did something unheard if: He read the book before he agreed to take me on as a client. They have a four-month campaign planned that's about as comprehensive and logical as I can imagine, and they tell me the book will be a success.
I've just about finished with the two companion volumes that'll make Ghosts into a trilogy, and the Extravagumbo Website is in the programming phase now.
Maybe it's all coming together. Who knows?
It any rate, I'm having fun. I bought a MusicMan Sabre that Scott Thunes has agreed to play for me, and soon there'll be an improvised jazz album available based on the memoir. Scott played on that too.
Atlas rocket or Hindenburg, baby. I can deal with either.
Seeing the banner ad reminded me that I've been remiss in posting my Amazon review (some days I hate how overwhelmed I get with the day job, but I can't do without it yet...).

The former marketing director of my publisher and my former publicist both had the same approach, which is to outsource all promotional efforts to the authors. So, here I am--a total nobody--asking people to review my book or interview me. Total recipe for failure, of course.
I wasn't able to convince my publisher that it was a lousy marketing plan, but once my publicist revealed himself as being cut from the same outsourcing cloth, I immediately fired him and hired my current publicist, who used to work for Random House and confirmed to me what I already knew, that having unknown authors do all the work simply won't work.
We'll see what happens. I already did a huge interview for Bass Musician Magazine, which should appear on their Website in August. First time I've ever been interviewed in my life, and the interviewer--Rich Suchow--pulled no punches. I expect more quasi-adversarial interviews. It's the nature of the book I wrote.
I don't take it personally. Wait'll you read the two companion volumes to the memoir. They're no-holds-barred sequels that'll make a lot of people very uncomfortable.

You have a great talent as a storyteller. I can hardly stop reading your stories once I start.
Look at all the postings saying that the poster found and read through the whole thread. That says a lot about how engaging your writing style is.
As you noted, there just aren't very many writers around these days that can actually write well. In my opinion, you really stand out above the vast sea of drivel being published these days. For that reason, I can see this book eventually gaining significant traction once word starts spreading around.
