INXS Rock Star Debuts

What's sad is that most of the nation, non-musicians, would assume that the INXS drummer is going to be a step up, simply because he is a "famous" musician with identifiable hits, as opposed to some "house" musician that probably isn't that good. Cause after all, if he was, he would play in some great band like INXS.

I understand & agree with you, 'Bo...although-
Who else is better to play INXS tunes than the members of INXS?

Granted, I have heard cover band musicians play the tunes better than the recording band(e.g. I still say you haven't lived until you heard Oteil play "Susuddio"[Phil Collins w/ Leland Skalr] or "This Is My Night"[Chaka Khan] or "The Bird"[The Time], etc).

Sometimes, though, the original player of the band is "better"...sometimes the material requires a low-tech/stoopid/raw approach vs. the method of a hired gun(only playing for the paycheck/no emotional attachment to the material).

I'm not saying this is the case with the House Band on this show.
Just presenting an observation from my experiences.
;)

It looked like a G&L P-bass, and sounded like it had an envelope filter on it.

I think Mig shoulda won - what a great talent.

I think they made the right choice. JD seemed to just fit so much better, the other 2 stood out like it was karoake night. Good singers, good stage persona, but didn't "belong" with INXS, they fit better with The House Band. Speaking of which, you KNOW all or most of the members of the House Band, with Dave Navarro guesting here and there will do an album and tour together as INXS opening act.

I just watched it--it was a G&L.

My wife and I called this one. My oldest son (15) gets to color 2,000 Girl Scout Christmas cards for picking Mig. Sucker. ;) How Marty got into the final three I'll never know. :spit:

This show has been a (twice) weekly event for our house. Shame it's over. It's been a lot of fun.

I actually watched this for a few minutes here and there, and I saw the last half of the finale. I pretty much thought all the singers were below the minimum level needed to become relevant. Only at the very last part of the competition, when JD played with INXS, could I see any of them working out.

I thought it was super-bizarre that the "play with INXS" section was such a tiny part of the overall competition. Who gives a rip what people are like doing other random 40-year old songs.

What band will be on the show next year, do you think? Any chance at all of the open position not being the singer?

JD sure is a talented singer and frontman, but man, he's also got a sizable "inner prick" factor. I think one day he's going to say something that leads to an Aussie fist in his face. Sometimes, though, a band can thrive on creative energy from internal fighting. We'll see.

I ended up hanging on a few forums with people on them who went to all the tapings. The consensus was that JD was by far the nicest of all the contestants in "real life", and the funniest to boot. All the people who met him felt that his buttheaded-ness was largely fabricated by the producers of the show. Time will tell though, of course. He's obviously a wild and crazy guy, and the band has said that they picked him largely for that reason. I do think he was the closest to "roit" for the band, FWIW.

The show was very entertaining, but the whole concept was, and is, an awful joke. While JD may have been the "best" of that group, watching him gyrate around in front of those (older) guys was...was...just -- ugh! I found myself giggling and saying (partly from experience), "This band crap ain't so easy, is it guys?"

I have been wrong 4,323 times this year alone, and this could be 4,324, but I don't think they'll chart with that "great" new song, and all the hype will have a life span of exactly 5 months and 29 days.

Late to the thread, but - fellow Australians, this show hasn't been on here on commercial stations, has it yet? Just Pay TV? (which I don't have).

I don't think this is from being excessively xenphobic, but most people I talked to think that a non-Australian singer would be a big liability for selling an album and gigging here. No matter what the remainder of INXS say about not finding a replacement for Michael, that's the way almost everyone will perceive it. There's a good reason why other replacements (eg Jon Stevens) didn't work out, and these reasons haven't changed.

From a $$$ point of view, good on the INXS-MH guys for doing it - who can begrudge fellow musicians wanting to continue making a living? However, it's yet another thing to make a replacement stick well enough and long enough no matter how talented they are. I'm in the "Yeah, but it's not INXS without Michael" camp.

You may right on this one.
Then again...I haven't even thought about INXS since about '88 or so; this show kinda bought 'em another few months.
(And I did pull out my Kick album on LP...I could only recoginize the lead guitarist & the bassist).
;)

Mark Burnett has hinted there may other bands that wanna do this show?
Oi...

Heh. Guess what album is #1 today on the Billboard pop catalog chart? [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] I'm not sure how important this particular chart is, but...just sayin'.

The single isn't released yet, but it sounds pretty good with the new parts and the slide guitar. It's getting plenty of major market airplay already too.

As I said upthread, I do feel that many of the Rawkers might be better served by solo careers. At least a couple of them stand to cash in from the show though, by the looks of things.

PIW-
What's the format of the radio stations playing new INXS?
Locally, I can think of maybe one that would...something called BOB-FM; it's a fairly new station that does attempt to play anything.

The Classic Rock station may play older INXS...certainly nothing new & that goes for any Rock band typically on their play list.

And Dark Side of the Moon is #8 after 1469 weeks on the charts. That's over 28 years. I think that must mean everyone on Earth has at least one copy by now. ;)

What is a Pop Catalog Chart?

Believe it or not, I never bought Dark Side Of The Moon...& I have maybe 3500-4000 albums?
