iOS Bass Players Thread #5, V, or cinco, take yer pick.

Yeah, what's good for one person is not necessarily good for the next. If I was gigging, running straight to a PA would be great, but I haven't gigged in a few years, and don't have any plans to at this point. My goals are to use it as a multi-fx pedal into my amp to get as wide a variety of sounds as possible to noodle around with at jam sessions, and for amateur recordings I make for my own amusement.

Ordered the sonic port. No one seems to have any reviews about bass quality but I figure the free app and potential for live use combined with how robust this seems compared to the competitors makes for a good sales pitch.

I will get back with my own review on it once I've had a good play.

What does everyone use for foot controllers, or do you bother? I have an FCP1010 and remember getting it to work with my iPad and Garageband i think a while back but haven't tried recently.

I love the track - but there is a "stickyness" with the percussion that I blame on the limitations of all the crazy stuff we are pushing. (Pushing in a good way - as in "Pushing the envelope")

I'm finding that if I skip all the extras and do everything on GB it is faster and more satisfying. Granted - I'm doing hobby demos that will never go beyond that.

That said - this thread has left me behind.

I'm lucky to have been a part of this ground breaking time in making music - but you dudes (and dudettes) are so far ahead that I've given up.

If I make any more iOS music I will share it with y'all for old times sake, but I'm pretty much left in the dust compared to where you guys are going.

With my iodock, I am only able to get sound to the speakers if I have it in bypass mode. Anyone else with this issue or a fix for it?

New song from Rude Duke, and our entry to the contest.

I wrote this song as kind of a journey into my partially viking past.

I used both my Ric and my Geddy. Jamup featuring BDDI, BassMaster, GK 700RB, Fender Super Bassman and Orange AD200 and.... Gelileo Organ.

Evangelos added great guitar work and kudos to him doing great job once again even though he have a family visit and he have to share his iPad with his nieces!!

He once again shows the power of his Ibby and Ampkit.



Btw, don't worry, there is nothing wrong with Evangelos voice!!! It is me doing the "vocals" this time..

Duke, What bass, amp and effects did you use around the 2:20 point of the song? The grindy bass tone. It is just killer!

I got a chance to introduce the new band to the Midimorphosis sound at rehearsal tonight.

We were playing Comfortably Numb, and I used the Blueline in Jamup, with Sunrizer playing strings underneath. It sounded awesome. The band loved the sound.

I did notice quite a bit of control was needed to get everything to gel with the string patch. I really had to pay attention to muting strings that weren't playing or I ended up making mud of the whole thing. Gonna tweak it a bit for next time.

You know, I usually do not create presets etc, so I can't really pinpoint my setup... lol

I've used both my Geddy and my Ric 4003 on this song. On this section it is the Fender Geddy Jazz, in addition it is the Cotton Mouth fuzz pedal in Ampkit which makes this huge impact of this grindy bass. The amp itself? hehe, I'm not quite sure it is either the Hiwatt head driving the Ashdown 8x10" cab in Ampkit, or the SVT Blue Line on Jamup. (I've used both Jamup and Ampkit on this song).
I'm quite sure it is the Cotton mouth in Ampkit in the input slot of Audiobus and the SVT Blue Line in Jamup in the effect slot of Audiobus with a tiny bit of chorus.
I play the Geddy very close to the neck, quite hard so the strings hit the fretboard sometime. Geddy does the same but without a pick. Both pups are fully open, same goes to tone knob.

Sonic port arrived today. I was initially a little bit disappointed with the quality and latency while using a guitar on ampkit presets. The bass was slightly off and then I tried the Ampeg model in ampkit with its 8x10 swapped mics around and mic positions . I found a close replica of my tone and without latency! Recording the bass into cubasis now will produce a professional sound now. So my advice as a first instrument bassist is if you are contemplating an iOS port of any kind that the sonic port is the cheapest out there and after messing around lives up to all that I want. The ampkit hd does have that charging feature and ability to port into a desktop but for my purposes I can transfer files via emails if I can't achieve results I want on the iPad!
iPad music production going to another level here!! I have all the gear I need and loads of pedals but the sonic port may come into play live if I do an acoustic gig through pa at some point. Hope this helps anyone else considering a purchase!

I keep the settings only when I'm in the middle of the song. But otherwise I've my base setup/ routine to get the tone on each bass I've. Presets are OK, but seldom one preset nails the tone on each bass. So I just know now what to do on each song. The Cotton Mouth fuzz is really great and snarly. I think on Jamup one could use the metal zone for getting something familiar

I ask as I have good knowledge regarding headphones.
Powered monitors, well look for a monitor with flattest frequency response and widest frequency operation. Specially look for a monitor which goes lowest. Wattage is not an issue, even a 10-15W per side unit will do great in a little room

By request, here's an old pic of a really fun bass.

I made it by hot gluing 1/2" square pieces of rear view mirror replacement plastic all over the face, then the back and sides were done with black dingly balls.

Of course, there was no iOS music back then, so it's totally OT.

I used the "Big AHH" patch in Sunrizer, which I edited to match the volume to what I needed. I wasn't sure what patch would work best so I used the one I had been playing with at home. It was really just goofing around but the band liked it and said it really filled up the song nicely.

I'm going to do some tweaking, and maybe try some string patches in Alchemy next time. It's all still very much in the experimental phase, but I'm pretty sure I'll use it live.

This new band is a total joy to work with. Everyone (including the drummer!) is really cool, and during my little detox episode last week (I finally ditched the opiates after over five years) every one of them checked up on me every day to see how I was doing. How cool is that?

Oh, and the band room is an awesome place. The drummer teaches in his basement/band room, so there are FOUR drum sets, including a nice Roland electronic set. The entire room is wall-to-wall Muppets. Yeah, Muppets. The drummer collects Animal toys, and there are literally hundreds of plush Muppets in the room. Plus, at the audition, I looked up at the ceiling where I was standing, and there is a 45 of a Cheech and Chong bit attached to the ceiling!!

A guitar buddy of mine is filling in on bass at our church this week and is using my gear. He is using my passive DJ5 direct. It sounded thin, so I decided to connect up the IPad with the Jamup app . I use the Orange AD200 sim for home practice, but have never used it live before. Wow did it sound good. I honestly couldn't tell the difference between it and the real thing live. I don't even care if the effects sound good or not, the amp sims made my day. Blew mind. No clipping or latency.

I think everybody will agree Jamup is the benchmark in iOS regarding amp sim. Both Jamup and Ampkit are now way way better then Amplitube regarding tone.

I've both with all bass related stuff on both.
As I sees it:
The SVT Blue line on Jamup and the SVT CL on Ampkit are so so close to each other. The Anpkit unit is maybe a tiny bit more versatile as the Ampkit SVT is a CL, 8x10 cabanas several mics.
The Sansamp BDDI in Jamup is great, but so is the Sansamp GT2 in Ampkit. Otherwise, the Orange AD200, SWR Redhead, the two GK's, the Acoustic and the Fender Super Bassman are better then the Trace Eliot the Fender bassman and the Ashdown in Ampkit.
Jamup is the best bass amp sim out there, Ampkit comes a respectable 2nd while Amplitube is outdated. The only solid point of Amplitube is superior recorder/ studio but I use Auria and Cubasis for recording.
