I wouldn't use the iPhone live unless all radios are shut down. You can still get updates, app notifications, sms, VM, etc... all of these things can cause sound drop out for a second of the app in use, if it's playing audio. Just put the phone in AIRPLANE mode and concentrate on the music....

+1. I've used my iPhone live many times at this point, and ALWAYS use airplane mode.
One other thing to consider is that keeping your Internet connection and all those notifications going is that it also drains on the battery. Last thing you want is for your device to go dead in the middle of a set. Just use Airplane Mode.
Agreed. Airplane mode for gigs.
The question was more along the lines of practicing. While I'm pretty sure I have my answer, what I want was the ability to ignore texts and calls without dropping the signal to the board/amp. The reason is that it's taken over 15-20 minutes to come out of airplane mode and get messages back. This is bad if you want to see if the kids have texted during your 10 minute break.
Given that the referb mini is about $300, and referb ipad4's are about $360, it's kinda a no-brainer.
The question now is Pad or Mini? A6 or A5? Does the processor matter? Is it only about the size of the interface, with regard to functionality?
When it comes to getting your messages. you could force a connection when coming out of airplane mode. if you refresh an email inbox or send a message the device will check multiple incoming message locations and you should get all texts when your phone does a "hook-up" to a tower.
everyone should have an understanding that you can't answer the phone when you're playing anyway....you wouldn't be able to hear a phone ring anyway.
so at break thats when you can answer your messages...live or practice.
I always put it in airplane to ensure no interruptions live and practice.....and long battery life.
When it come to processor with the usability of apps being run together with audiobus now....I would say go with as much processor as possible. It's just $60.00 it will be felt in the long run. That is a super deal for a iPad4

Interesting. I've actually written a song before where I tried to spell a secret message with the chord progression. Got me in a ton of trouble with the woman!!

That's one thing I won't miss about my last band. The drummer would frequently decide that we were playing songs (at a gig) that he and the guitarist knew, but I had never played before. I always managed to fake my way through it, but I hate playing that way.
Yeah, it's against better judgement, but I'm usually voted down. I try to fake it, but when no-one in the band is quite sure on even the format of the song (did we say two or three solos, when is that bridge...) you become very unsure about transitions, chord changes etc. and the whole thing just looks and sounds week and scared. I'm reasonably good at listening and reacting to what the band does, but it's more fun to lead and build anticipation before a solo than to discover half a bar too late that the solo has started already. 
A somewhat drunk audience won't notice much, but I of course like it better when we are better rehearsed, it's more fun when you can go at it with confidence.

We had a similar issue at a recent gig. The venue had us there for this same party last year, when the band had a different bass player and guitarist (guitarist retired, bassist fired). Well, they recalled that the band did Bring Me To Life then, and a couple of people suggested it. We don't normally play that song because, even though people like it, it KILLS the dancefloor. And seeing as we hadn't played it in 3-4 months, I wasn't about to attempt it, and neither was the guitarist/keyboardist.
It was at that moment that the singer, after we had finished our encore and the house lights had gone up, started singing the opening lines to the song.
I coulda shot her right then and there. I have one standing and steadfast rule. If we haven't rehearsed it, we don't play it. "Better to keep your mouth closed and have people think you a fool, than to open your mouth and remove all doubt" sort of thing. The drummer was like, "Well, I've played that song 1,000s of times, and so has the singer. There's no reason why we shouldn't have done it."
I explained to him as politely as I could that the entire band needed to have the song down flawlessly before we'd play it live at a gig that paid as much as this one did. He still maintained that they were all drunk enough to not have cared. At that point I said, "Fine, next time we'll do the song. However, the guitarist and I also know Ants Marching, and have played that thousands of times. So we'll immediately start into that one following Bring Me To Life. If you're not up to speed on it at that point, then it's on you."
