I have noise using SonicPort. It's not obnoxious and I can imagine some people not noticing it depending on their output equipment.

It's a static/sweeping/raspy sound and the volume tracks with the input level.. For instance, when I am not playing, it is silent, but when I pluck a note it increases and as the note trails off it reduces with the input volume.

I have tried different basses, different apps, different ipads, different cables, and different headphones.

I am not sure if this is just a limitation of the hardware in the ipad, or a limitation of the SonicPort, or I actually have a defective SonicPort.

So, what do you guys think? Should I be able to expect an entirely noiseless setup with iOS?

Yes.

My basses are all well-shielded, but I get no noise with my Apogee Jam and iPad2, even in noisy electrical environments. Same deal when I move it to my iPhone 5.

There are things you can do to eliminate noise, which I'm learning through trial and error, and reading tips on the iOS thread.

First, before playing through the Sonic Port, put your iDevice in Airplane mode (Settings). Also, close all apps (in ios7 double tap home then drag open apps up and away), then open Audiobus if you're using it, then your amp modeler (Ampkit/Jamup/Amplitube/etc) then MTDAW/Garageband/etc if you're recording.

Also, if you're using multiple apps, some apps are finicky or will not work together (check each app's compatibility with other apps).

I'm using Sonic Port with an iPhone 4S, but can get noise if I don't do the above. If you still have noise, reset your iDevice and try it all again. Also make sure all your physical connections are seated properly.

When I did experience noise, it was obnoxious. I'm new to Sonic Port, so maybe I haven't noticed any subtle noise yet. I do hear a little noise in the clip below, but I thought it was just some of the effects I was using (chorus and reverb/delay).

I use the sonicport with an Ipad4 and have had no noise issues. I don't put it in airplane mode or close any other apps, jsut plug it in, open up jamup, and I am good.

You might want to try messing with the input level on the sonic port. I had some trouble with nose and other anomalies with an Apogee One until I figured out where the input gain needed to be for various combinations of iPad, iPhone and bass.

Noiseless? It's my opinion that anytime you throw effects at anything, there's bound to be noise. The chorus and phaser are big contributes to any noise I might have. I try to use a noise gate to keep quiet, but it doesn't work all the time. It's also a good reason to add effects during mixdown. But then, I have no idea what they do now. The last time I was in a 'real' studio was 15 years ago.

I'm not going to be much help, because I use my Sonic Port live and haven't tried recording. In the live setting, it's very good. Even when compared to the keyboard signals.

He wrote the song, i played the first leads (and rhythm guitar , i am panned to the left), we shared the bridge and he played the rest leads. he also played everything else, including bass from Beatmaker 2.

I have a Line 6 LD300, it has an XLR out and no send for effects. Could I run my bass into my iPad for effects then my iPad into the regular input jack on the combo amp?

You can use a Line 6 Sonic Port to do this. I expect there's a way with the Apogee Jam, but it doesn't have an output, so I'm not sure how it's done with that.

The line output is located near the dock and uses fixed volume for connection to powered speakers, mixer, PA, recording equipment, or amplifier.
You can use either output, or both.

So ... Line out to guitar input I would guess. Looks like you'll need to get a 3.5mm (stereo?) to 1/4" cable for that. Not sure how the stereo affects that ...

My Sonic Port line out is changed by the iPad volume. It's a pain, really, because I forget to count how many bars on my volume so it's the same every time. I haven't found a way to change that function.

The last time I was in a 'real' studio was 15 years ago.

I'm not actually using any effects. If I use Ampkit, Pocket GK or Jamup I get the static with the SonicPort. Again its fairly mild and probably would be covered up by adding effects.

Even if I remove the amp modeling in Jamup I get it.

I tried airplane mode and this didn't resolve it either. Maybe I just got a (2nd) defective unit. The first one died after two weeks.
