I have a question for any of the guitar players hanging around this thread.

How did you warm up to the idea of going ampless in a live setting? Do you go ampless in a live setting or only recording?

If someone approached you about starting a band and insisted that this would be a ampless gig where all sound would be run through a PA/monitors, how would you feel about it, from a guitarists point of view?

So, that is actually several questions. The reason I ask is I have not played in a band for the last 3 years because most musicians just don't get it when it comes to volume and this leads to uneven mixes and volumes that are too loud, especially for the patrons sitting in front of the band with nothing to absorb the sound. I would love to start playing out again but I am just not looking for a band with people like that any longer, which puts me at a real disadvantage for finding something I would be happy with. I'm looking for a way to encourage an apprehensive guitar player to let go of the conventional thinking that they need a 30-50watt amp cranked to get the sound they want.

Dude. I've been harping on this exact thing for MONTHS.

My current guitar player brough his half stack to rehearsal a couple weeks ago. All I could do is roll my eyes.

The first two rehearsals with this band, we did exactly what you described. We all went ampless, him with a foot pedal multi-effects unit, me with Jamup. It sounded incredible.

As soon as he showed up with that half stack, the volume increased and the mix went to crap.

The only way to get out of a volume war....because everyone wants to hear themselves clearly......is to let someone else have control of the volume....someone who's not playing an instrument. And everyone have there own monitor that doesn't effect the overall sound.... That's the only way.... Everyone's not being a turd and thinking that only them should be heard over everyone else....it's a matter of hearing yourself correctly most of the time. One person gives themselves just enough then someone else gives themselves up just enough...and before you know it there's nowhere else to go....most of the time it's subconsciously done..... It's really evident when the group takes a break then when you come back its knocking your head off....
In ears have been the best way for us to control that stage volume and everyone having there own mix.
It's a tough transition but when it's done......it's a beautiful thing.

It's theoretically possible, but all the devices and controller I know of have an in, out, and maybe a thru. This means that it's more likely that it would require 2 PUCs to get a MIDI in and out. If it was an in/out in one port, since all the keyboards/controllers I know don't have a MIDI in/out, the PUC would need another breakout box with a duplexer to get get the separate in and out. OR... a PUC MIDI patchbay. That way you could patch the in or out to many devices into the PUC then to the iOS device.

Even with all that, it's still a very usable device. I'd guess that if the price was a bit lower, it would be a must have for many iPad users. The PUC is very cool.

In theory, of course.

It's not theory- the Gordius Little Giant MIDI controllers can do two-way communication. I used to have an Axe-FX Ultra, and I could do MIDI in, out, and power over one 7-pin MIDI cable.

How would you use the Puc to interface devices that are stuck with old school MIDI in/out/thru without some sort of adapter or second Puc?

I'm missing something.

I haven't yet....but I used it live last night pre update and ill be using it at practice tonight after update.....

Btw....I used the orange ad last night on one of the songs because it sounded great in the run through. It was used, the 360 was used and the super bassman last night (three different types of songs) they each fit perfectly with the song types.

I understand, now.

A 7-pin cable, arguably, is not a MIDI cable. It is a cable capable of sending MIDI data both directions, but not the MIDI standard. The MIDI standard is the 5-pin, where it uses only 3 pins, unless it has MIDI phantom power, then they put a few volts through the other pins.

It can still work, but not with a 5-pin connector.

None the less, it's still a very cool tool.

Had a quick play with it now and didn't notice much different. The AD200B controls are still broken, although it's still simple enough to work around by tweaking the master every time you change the EQ. Some of the pedal graphics are different eg the Q-Tron.

I guess I'm joining the revolution! I recently got an iPhone, and I'm trying out some of these apps you guys have talked about. I want to eventually stop lugging an amp altogether. Can anyone tell me what kind of sound-reinforcement issues I'll face if I go this route? Various clubs have various levels of PA equipment, from awesome to none. So how do you guys handle this?

My advice would be to not sell your amp just yet. I've had great results with my Jamup rig through FOH, but all it takes is one overzealous guitar player and you feel extremely underpowered.

As long as everyone plays nice and your have the PA to handle it, life is good. My Jamup rig goes to every rehearsal/gig, and if I feel like I'm being drowned out, I add my amp to the equation. In a perfect world, FOH/monitors(or in-ears) is plenty.

I've been running primarily direct for a few decades, now. Moving to a rig with the iOS is just the next progression for me. I do have a GK 200MB (not MB200) that I just love, if I need a monitor for myself and drummer. It sounds great, packs a punch, and can even be mounted on a mic stand.

The real advice I have is don't trust anyone to give you a good DI box. Control everything up to the mic cable that leads to the house. But that's good advice, no matter what rig you use.

Here is Dual amping I do within Auria. I use two plugins here, the THM which is an amp sim and the mighty Saturn plugin which can do about anything.

Saturn is maybe the most powerful tool I've ever seen as one can split the frequency range into 5-6 groups where each group can be processed differently!! Drive, dynamics, type of drive (clean tube, warm tube, broken tube, tape saturation etc). Beware Saturn is power hungry. iPad 3 is the minimum.
