The original cables from Apple used to be that way too. I still have an older one with the release buttons on the sides.

Do you guys just run your output signal through the headphone jack of the iPad/iphone into a DI or amp head?
Yes all the apogee jam guys do to both. I am running a different interface which does both a/d and d/a then out to DI but yes same principle. Mine just comes from a monitor out on the interface to DI for FOH. If running to a mic channel on a soundboard then it needs to go DI but to an amp it just goes to the input or to an effect return to get a less colored sound by the amps preamp section.
Hey guys, been messing around with Amplitube and Jamup for quite a while with varying results. For the life of me, I can't get a good tone out of Amplitube's default bass amp and Jamup's B15 amp. No matter what I do, the tone is always distorted. Tried googling for iOS amp setups but haven't found much to go on. Would appreciate insights as to how to properly set up the apps.
There's not much help for Amplitube iOS' default bass amp model. It's the reason for most of the pages of these threads!! There have been many months of complaints about IK's offering to us bassists, and their only response so far has been their B15R model, available as an in-app purchase. It's slightly better (IMO), but the amp models in Jamup just walk all over Amplitube iOS.
Now, the B15 in Jamup is a tricky beast. The EQ works the same way the real ones do, in that if you want to boost the mids you must cut the bass and treble. I personally don't use that amp very often, but you really have to be careful with the levels. I've found it to react differently to different basses, so I can't really give you much pointers other than to say that the tone is there. Don't give up on it.
Putting the LA-2A compressor after the B15 in Jamup really helps.

From the audio out (I use a Jam): a short 3.5m male to female 3" extension (takes the stress of the connection point), to a 3.5mm-->1/4" mono adapter, to a standard guitar cord that runs into the passive in on my amp.
It mostly works/sounds fine, but I sometimes get a little crackling if I move or bump the extension/adapter combo around a little. Both the extension and adapter I've had forever and were probably pretty cheap.
To minimize and simplify things, I'm interested in building my own 3.5m->1/4" cable as was shown in this thread.

In general, my experience has been that you sometimes need to be conservative with the settings before they get to the amp. My iOS device output (be it iPad or iPhone) is just between halfway and 2/3 up, most of the amps in the various applications (AT, AK, JamUp) are set about the same (between noon and 2), my bass is rolled up fairly high (with room for just a little more if I want it), and my amp is where I get most volume control.
My interface is a Jam, and that's rolled up about 'two thumbs' worth from absolute minimum, or, whatever will just make the LED tease with yellow if I get on the strings hard or pluck a G.

IMHO the B15R on amplitube blows the default amplitube default (svt) bass amp out of the water and also the AT default (svt) is nowhere near as good sounding as jamup's blueline. It's flip flopped for me jamup has a better svt and AT has a better b15 but I put the EQ pedal after the b15 in jamup with a slight boost on the 400 and a slight boost on the 3.2k and the b15 in jamup is fantastic.
Also to me the AT's svt doesn't sound like an svt CL like they say it is supposed to be but more like an svt450h which really isn't an svt at all. It has a solid state preamp into a solid state power section. It isn't tubey sounding at all its more of a sterile sound and it distorts too quickly. And not a good musical sounding distortion either it's more of a harsh clipping.
To me if you're getting distortion all the time no matter what you're doing then it sounds like you input levels are off.....are you using a passive or active bass? What interface are you using and how are you setting you input levels?

Btw, the B15 on Jamup is not the same model as the B15R on Amplitube. The B15 1964/66 is the "right" one regarding heritage and old school tone, and as Adam says can benefit an EQ help due to its simple/ too simple EQ. Reminds me the BDDI EQ.

Wow, all these replies in less than 12 hours. Much appreciated. I use an iRig, and listen through headphones. Would it make any difference if I plugged in powered speakers instead?

Nah, joking aside, the iRig is fine, or shell I say it was a fine solution 2-3 years ago for bedroom practicing (with easily driven headphones) but have lots of limitations due to crosstalk and over issues when you send AND receive an analog signal through the headphone socket.
In addition the iRig can't drive serious headphones, so when you are pushing for some volume you will get distortion.
Get an Apogee Jam or equivalent and be prepared for great tone.

That bad huh? I had some doubts (although I wasn't too sure why) when I bought the iRig but back then there weren't any alternatives especially here in Indonesia.
Right now I'm drooling over an iTrack Solo. Anyone have an experience with these things?
