Yeah that sounds right. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the XD is also partly digital, rather than a strictly analog Mutron-style filter.
All digital, no? Correct me if I'm wrong, too.
I've started using something similar to the Southampton All Things Equal, each channel dedicated for each bass, well 2 for 1, and 1 for 1, it works very well. I'm trying to re-think how I may lift my board up so I can get to the pedals easier, but I probably did 300 crunches at first, adjusting the XD to different inputs and basses.
My #1 advise for tuning in that pedal, be able to twist the sensitivity and frequency while playing your bass. Start with the Sens and move to the Freq, then Res, then mix to taste. It made a world of difference hearing the adjustment in "real time" to get it to that point where I like it
Pretty sure you are correct, and Xerograph is Digital, not Analog.
Got to play with the XD by myself tonight. Got some great envelope sounds dialed in, including a pretty close approximation of my Microtron IV, but also a less quicky, more rubber band sound I've heard Mike Gordon use over the years. Maybe more like a Meatball? I don't know, but I love it.
I want to have an envelope sound dialed in that also works with the expression pedal without turning a knob, even if it's not the best possible expression sound. But in doing this, I noticed that even in envelope mode, if I touched my Dunlop mini expression pedal, it would start reacting to that until I parked it in neutral. Is this normal? Some weird bug? I haven't consulted either manual yet, and it's not even a real issue, but just wondering.
Anyway I just love the thing. This is the filter sound I've had in my head.

engage the envelope stomp (right), but adjust you range (I do FCCW) on the exp knob. Sometimes it does help to have exp with adjustable range but my dunlop dvp4 works fine, clean and quiet
Now I see you did that hmm, I'm currently using a SA reflex but its set wide open, works when the exp button is on, blue light, but make sure that exp knob is dimed
The switch turns the envelope filter on or off - the expression pedal essentially raises the "floor" frequency and will work whether the switch is engaged or not (the EXP knob sets the "ceiling" of the pedal). This is nice if you want a static HPF that you can adjust on the fly.
Settings please.. And are you using a pick?
No pick. TI Jazz Flats, bridge pickup soloed on a Jazz. Fast speed, 4 pole, up envelope. Resonance at noon, frequency maybe 1130, sensitivity and volume to taste. Just a hair of dry signal. The frequency thing is the key for me so far, getting it to cut off so that even when the filter is fully open, it's not letting 100% of the highs through.
Off topic, but I’m enjoying these for some brutal bass tones on a session today.
Oh boy, XD + expression + fuzz + big cab = a very good time! I know lots of folks like the XD for synthy applications, but I'm digging it as a filthy fuzz wah.
I love using the XD it as a fuzzed out wah! With the right fuzz and settings it can nail that parachute-like wah Cisneros' Sonic Titan solo.
Me too… I have a dedicated three knob Xerograph on my board that I use for fuzzed out wah. It really is delicious and IMO is the best.
That's a great wah tone. I wonder if Al was using the same setup for the version of "The Clarity" off Live at Third Man? Although that sound could be a phaser as well, since I've seen a Mutron Biphase on his board.
The last time I saw Sleep, whatever envelope he was using wasn't dialed in properly. I could hear it open the whole time in the Dragonaut solo, rather than sweeping. XD is similarly hard to dial in-the line between massive sweep and no sweep at all is tough to find sometimes, at least with my rig.
