Irreversible climate damage is imminent

It isn't my burden to disprove the claims. It is the burden of those making the claims to prove them so, under the scrutiny of peer review and rigorous testing. Which the IPCC has NOT done.

Some people have presented their findings and views, you disagree with those. So yes, the burden is on you to disprove their conclusions.

Science doesn't prove things, you can only truly do that in mathematics. Observations are recorded and conclusions inferred. If you disagree with the inference you need to make an observation which disproves it. Science 'proves' things by producing a body of results which refine and hone conclusions from initial studies - to the point at which they can no longer be rationally disagreed with from empirically gathered data.

Galileo wasn't a scientist. He was a pre-scientist. Aristotle's view wasn't a scientific view.

Who eventually got the consensus? Funny.

I've already tried to explain that. Some people struggle to differentiate modern and BC. Lack of comprehension I believe.

Out loud? :D

It's kinda cute, ain't it.

What will be your reward in the end for all this hard work you are doing? You are fighting the good fight, but for what, exactly?

It's not a good fight. It's more like I see a causal topic, get involved not knowing much, read all about how it's only this way or no one else's opinion matters, then do ten seconds on google to find the issue is hotly contested not by laymen in the neighborhood watering holes around town but actual scientists, the same one some people seem to deny even exist.

I think what some are doing here is clearly what they call blowing smoke. If the NSA is tapping every phone or has the ability to do so I guess the net rumors are true about paid disinfo agents infesting all manner of discussion forums to shape public opinion....... I called some people dumb but on second thought I don't think anyone can be that dumb.

Basically some are saying, believe in science you knuckle draggers, but only the ones that we agree with. :rollno:

I never said the free market can solve the problem if it really exists. Solving stupidity could fix it. Like bottled water at 1.00 a gallon. I think last time I checked City water 10 years ago, 11 cents a gallon. Why do we spend more money on bottled water then for less then half of what we spend we could get local water companies to improve the water from the tap to the same level of bottled water? I'd much prefer tap water if it was decent.

That said you present this as science tells us there is a problem. NO individuals are telling us and some other individuals do not agree.

There is no disagreement on the world being round by scientists so I believe that the Earth is round and not flat. There is nothing to gain by lying about it so there is no disagreement.

Now I just did a search to make sure no real scientists think the earth is flat but all I found was a man tainted by his religion.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g84g2KJcUV0

SO that seals it for me. Earth is round. Global warming? That is not decided by threading dissenters.

No one is claiming that there hasn't been climate change in the past.

Here's something to think about:

Science told you that throughout the history of the earth, there's been climate change millions of years before we had any humans to record it or measure it. They can account for the source. You accept it as true.

Science tells you that currently we have climate change, they're measuring it, and that they can account for the source. You don't accept it as true.

The only difference between science telling you about things happening now and science telling you about things happening then is that you've got some AM radio fueled paranoia about government involved. It's your bias that is causing your disconnect.

So you disagree with the science because you disagree with the dystopian implementation that AM radio has suggested may come along with it?

If you believe that the "free market" will solve a long term, global, social issue, you have a fundamental misunderstanding of how the "free market" works.

No offense to you sir, but I don't really like someone telling me to not "waste" natural resources.

I use what I determine I need or want. I don't "waste" them, although you may think I do. I'm not telling you how to use YOUR natural resources.

And they're not "ours." The resources I pay for are mine and I use them how I see fit.

I'm not "tempted" to use resources, I employ them to accomplish my goals. It's not evil; it's called living and I'm taking it to the hilt baby.

Don't take this as a personal attack on you, I only quoted you because it gives me a point to respond to with my opinion.

Everyone is "wasting" (exploiting) resources for their own purposes. EVERYONE. It's just that some like to tell others to use less, and the rest of us do our thing without trying to control others.

And "global warming" is not going to "disappear overnight" because I start recycling plastic jugs. "Global warming" or whatever you want to call it - "supposed" man-made climate change, will not end because the causes of it are not gong to change. There is currently no substitute for fossil fuels! There is no way to lift a jet off the runway except fossil fuels. There is no other way to transport people and goods how we ALL need them to be transported. There's no other way to produce the food and products, and provide the services that we ALL need and want. Etc. etc. etc. NOTHING SIGNIFICANT IS GOING TO CHANGE in terms of what we're doing nor does it need to. And everyone who clamors for others to "reduce" is using tons of resources, which is the definition of hypocritical. So don't tell others to reduce, just reduce if that's what you want to do, but realize you're still part of your "problem."

Al Gore flies to a Climate Change summit to try and get me to "reduce," and "wastes" more fossil fuel than I will use responsibly in ten years! PREPOSTEROUS!! HYPOCRITE!! And he does it to LINE HIS OWN POCKET$! :scowl:

One more government-subsidized electric train that 99.999% of us don't want or need, or one more government-subsidized green factory that most of us won't benefit from, are not going to offset all the other uses for fossil fuels that we ALL need, want, and are going to continue to exploit... for our own good and respectable purposes.

Increase. Exploit. Recycle (aluminum cans, because they pay for them). :D And I don't care what the lofty-critical-but-fellow-exploiters think.

:not hiding:

Nope, 100% sincere.

And good observation. Yes - progress, innovation, and exploitation of the earth is exactly "how we got to this point." The point of being the most advanced species and civilization the world has ever seen (USA).

I'm extremely proud that we have "got to this point." I remember when I was young the scaremongers were warning of the coming ice age and the planet being so crowded each person would have just one square foot to stand upon all over the entire planet. Scared the crap out of me, and I never forgave them. I look out my window at the beautiful blue sky, breathe in the fresh air, and remember their warning that, 20 years later (20 years ago now) I would be wearing a gas mask and looking at a black sky 24/7. BASTARDS!!

But, since you were so nice to leave such a warm, friendly response to my post containing nothing against you, only my opinion, I dumped the used motor oil I removed from my gas-guzzling SUV today onto the ground in your honor.

Have a great day! :D

P.S. Oh, and I assume you use no fossil fuels nor buy any plastic products, otherwise the hypocrisy is laughable!

This sort of attitude is what makes it so easy for alarmists to dismiss anyone who questions the UN report as nuts, or unscientific. This stuff reads as if it was copy/pasted directly from a transcript of the republican infomercial that is "talk radio".

The IPCC has been shown to hide data, manipulate data, etc. It's not a credible source. You could simply show this and ask for a valid source, of which there are some, that do show some warming, just not as much as the UN would like.

Also realize you have to pick your battles. There are some alarmists so emotionally invested in this climate change stuff, no amount of good data will change their minds, just as there are deniers who will believe we can do whatever we want with no effect on our environment, no matter how much good data says otherwise.

Enjoy dumping your oil in your neighbors groundwater...or do you suppose since you bought and paid for it, you can do that and it will have zero effect on anything outside your property line?

Where this 28 page (so far) thread is ultimately headed as with all the other CC threads is what can be done[?] There's no way you're going to convince China (that puts out nearly 50% more CO2 than the US), Russia, India, Japan or any developing nations to implement strict emission standards with their fragile economies. It’s just not going to happen … not until there are some new advancements in the energy technology fields that are feasible, and affordable. For now – I think we just have to learn to deal with it, and do what we can within reason, and without damaging our very fragile economy.

I am fine with reducing our dependence on Chinese manufacturing. We're the ones demanding cheap products with limited environmental recourse.

There is only one guy on AM talk radio that still refers to it as a "hoax", and I wish he would stop with it, however there is no "fueled paranoia" or any one condoning "dumping used motor oil on the ground".

and we have a WINNER!....exactly my point.

if that's what we are trying to accomplish, i'm all for it

but we HAVE damaged our fragile economy already...no pipeline....pie-in-the-sky (for now) green projects that accomplish nothing except to line the pockets of the perpetrators.

i'm all for green as long as it is nearly the same price as what we are paying now....get it more developed and i'm sure it will be...someday

all russia and china are going to do is the same thing Iran does in it's "negotiations" about nukes....talk, talk, talk...and continue to do exactly what it wants to do.... China is not about to pay the price for cutting emissions

and until it and other nations do, it is absolutely silly for us to be strangling ourselves....i am not saying do nothing, i am saying the technology is not developed yet

let's hope it IS developed before this "imminent catastrophe" takes place

Amen brother.

I'll admit I haven't listened to talk radio in some years...some may have tempered their bloviating?

My day job involves spending a lot of time in the car. Heard about every type of radio programming there is a thousand times over to the point I don't even listen to any radio anymore and haven't for some time. The whole "heard it all before" thing...to the point I could predict what songs were going to be on various stations playlist before they played them, or predict what political talking points were going to be on the days program and the opinions that were going to be promoted about said subjects.

I basically shut off the radio and got a smartphone. Can waste all my time here now instead. :)

Oh man, I found this incredibly funny!

Will, I think we'd agree that moving carbon from the geosphere to the atmosphere by burning fossil fuels for 150 or so years is likely going to have some effect.

The question then might be just how much of an effect?

It could be much less than IPCC projections, or even more?

And what can/should be done about it?

On this, I highly doubt that much will be done regardless of the answer to the first question.

I drove my inefficient diesel-fuel-guzzling humongous 6 wheel drive smoke belching pickemup over to the dump today to deliver a plastic bag full of plastic jugs to stick in my landfill in all y'all's honor! Punched down on it real hard leaving the dump just to create a little extra black smoke for y'all to enjoy! :D

Yes, I could have driven my HHR or your Prius, but I decided I wanted to waste some dinosaurs...
