Is a bass player really necessary?

No instrument is really necessary. All the good music has already been recorded!!

They say Sociologists are there mostly to teach other Sociologist about how to become one.

Perhaps the OP is right, we are the reason we exist, trapped in a regime of implacable sustainability. We all come from a rebel that once spur outside his/her paradigm to spread and multiply uncontrollably.

Or perhaps the OP has Mondini dysplasia (a cochlear malformation) which disables his abilities to discern the impact of low frequency notes into the mix.

Or none of the above.

This is correct, everything since 1985 has been utterly pointless as we did it all in the 50s, 60s and 70s. This is the era of personality presentation, not musical innovation. I still secretly like Nicki though...

I feel like you don't really need one. A guitar is only an octave higher and it can still cover a lot of the notes that a bass guitar does. Also, you could just use an eight-string guitar and tune the lowest string down to a low E. I know that some bands have eight string guitarists as well as bassists and the bassists play the same notes as the the eight string guitar players, but the bass will make the low end sound "fuller" because of how thick the strings are. But I don't think that really makes any much of a difference. I know this question might make me appear ignorant, but this is my own judgement.

Guitar?? Why the hell would a band need a guitar?? Just use a 7 string bass low B to high F and you're done!

Guitar. Ppff.

It ultimately depends on the sound you are going for, some bands (especially in the doom metal genre) tune pretty low (some down to Low F) and utilize octave downs to achieve a denser low end. Off the top of my Head Slomatics and In the company of serpents don't utilize bass players. It also lets the drums stand out a bit more if that's your thing as well.
