Is Deep Purple in the same league with Led Zeppelin?

Is Deep Purple in the same league with Led Zeppelin?

I did remember reading this year's ago...

1972. Deep Purple was recognised by The Guinness Book of World Records as the "globe's loudest band" for a concert at the London Rainbow Theatre, during which the sound reached 117 dB and three members of the audience were rendered unconscious!
Well, that's it then, innit? Thread over!

I would say that lyrically Purple were far superior to Led Zep when Zep were not stealing them from other obscure artists. Led Zep songs lyrically are garbage, they just don't make sense, go and listen to Led Zep lyrics and you will say to yourself "What was that all about"!

Hardly. Jimi Hendrix and Cream had done the blues-rock thing before Zeppelin.

I appreciate the great love you have for DP, it's admirable.

But consider this, sample 100 professional music critics then 100 random lovers of rock music and I predict DP would not even make the top-15 rock band list (whatever the fudge that means), which would include . . .

Beatles
Stones
Who
Hendrix
Cream
Zeppelin
Police
Nirvana
. . . and so on

So just enjoy their music and try to be less defensive about the fact that most, but not all, listeners don't appreciate them as much as Zeppelin. Try as you may you'll not change their minds.

It says a lot that in a thread about if 2 bands are in the same league there are a ton of people making generalizations about why they think one is the best (and it seems to be more Zep fans from what I've seen)

Seems pretty clear it's a regional thing for one, if you grew up in the US chances are you heard way more Zep but that doesn't necessarily make them better just because they're the band you grew up with.

Both bands put out plenty of great music, both bands were huge enough they were playing the biggest venues/festivals around. Both bands are still relevant with big followings decades later. That is the same League by most definitions. If you only are familiar with best tunes from one group you're missing out. Though I'd wager more people have heard all the Zep's hits before judging them vs Deep Purple, seems a lot of the people saying Zep are the best can't even name more then a few D.P. songs.

I think it's weird how much of a cult like following Zep has after decades, they still get defensive when you even try and say another band is in the same league if this thread is any indication. In the end some of these new musicians/bands smoke them both anyways:

“Every inch of my love”? You don’t have to be Fellini to figure that one out.
