Is Deep Purple in the same league with Led Zeppelin?

You're completely disregarding what I said about Purple staying active. Purple doesn't have the current novelty factor Zeppelin does. I'm not debating current popularity. Obviously LZ is held up to an almost mythical status but I think that has a lot to do with how and when they went away. And Purple draws pretty well. Better overseas than here but here it's arenas and large theaters. Zeppelin would undoubtedly do stadiums.
Page and Plant toured the 90's (which i attended) and it was a 3/4 filled arena....maybe 8,000 people....btw, Jason Bonham is a very good drummer but he doesnt swing like his dad imo....i saw Bonham open for the Cult and it was a great show by Bonham.

Yea ok. What’s your point? So if Zeppelin, not Page & Plant, Zeppelin, toured playing Zep songs they would only draw 8,000 people? Cmon man this is not reality based. Not in the US. Zeppelin is considered by far the better band here. Not even close. Zeppelin is a top 5 rock band of all time Deep Purple is maybe top 100. In the US.

IF they did tour, as Zeppelin, in the US, it would sell out stadiums of 80,000 people within an hour. And Deep Purple would probably not sell out a theater with 10,000 people.

Now to be clear. I’m not saying who’s “better.” If you enjoy DP better than Zep that’s your choice. They are a good band with great musicians and some great songs. But as far as who is more popular, in the US, and who would sell more tickets, in the US. It’s not even close. And in my opinion I like DP but I love Zep and that’s not even close.

I was surprised the Page/Plant tour didnt do better......surprised that they did not do another album.

Thats my point.....John Bonham is gone so to me, you cant call it Led Zeppelin, jmho....the Page/Plant lineup was very good....Page played his Transperformance Les Paul which has all of these tunings Page employed in the studio...it was a great show.

Sure, Zep was always bigger then DP, no question, but much of that had to do with Zeps overall style and image vs DP, it was somehow more commercial but the mighty John Bonham played a huger role in their sound and sadly he's gone.

Im glad i got to see Page/Plant up close!

That's what l was thinking from the first day l saw this thread. Deep Purple is a classic band with some great songs. But, if you want to stand eye to eye with Led Zeppelin, well,... you gotto be more than that... very much more than that. Zeppelin has 3 or 4 legendary songs on every one of the records. In some cases, they are a master piece from start to finish.

And ppl who call Page a sloppy guitarist are correct if you compare him to technical wizards like Al Di Meola or Zakk Wylde. But, the blues and blues rock doesn't call that kind of precision and usually doesnt benefit from it either..

"Sloppy is good" is a copout. Plenty of great blues and blues based guitarists that aren't sloppy. Ever. My personal favorite, Gary Moore, is just one example.

Gary better guitarist than Page is probaly true. Wouldnt even bother to counter that. But where is his anthology of world wide legendary records to show for?
Yet you did counter it with the "record sales" argument no less. You realize there are bands that have outsold Zeppelin? Are we going to say they're all better or more talented?
I didn't counter with record sales. I acknowledged that technically Moore tops Page. But, what difference does it make. There is no technical final exam, especially in the blues. It didnt seem to effect Page's ability to put out music that the whole world loved.. or Hendrix for that matter. There's a thousand and one technical wizards who never made a song that any cares much about. If technical proficiency was the bench mark for classic music, most of the music that ppl know and love wouldnt be around. Chess records, motown, rock and roll in general isnt supposed to be technical..

Maybe not technical but also not sloppy necessarily. Page just either didn't grasp his limitations and tried playing much faster than he was capable or he didn't care.

And you may not have directly countered with record sales but what else that is tangible made Page's records "world wide legendary" in comparison? I'm far from a Clapton fan but even in his heroin induced worst he wasn't playing the slop Page did. Is his anthology world wide legendary enough? Jeff Beck? I get it. You're a LZ fan and I'm really not. I like a handful of their songs so I don't buy the "Hammer of The Gods" b/s. Their MVP, IMO, was Peter Grant. He marketed and sold them perfectly.

Gary Moore found this out when he toured with Thin Lizzy in 78 and AC/DC opened....AC/DC buried Thin Lizzy that night in Kansas City, no matter how many fast runs Gary could muster, it just didnt go over like AC/DC (who were obviously on a role by then)......fans were leaving in droves when Lizzy came on and sadly Thin Lizzy never recovered.

I prefer Gary Moores solo rock albums early 80's.

Jimmy Page wrote great songs. Period. Sloppy? When he was high on stage sometimes. But in the studio? Is “Over The Hills and Far Away” sloppy? I could go on and on. He wrote great songs. Period. Does that matter? Does that count? He wrote albums full of great songs. Album after album. He was a riff master. A hook master. A melody master. A master on the guitar which is acknowledged by anyone who knows anything about guitar. And if you don’t know that then you don’t know what your talking about. Period.

I like Purple, they have a bunch of songs that I like, some are great songs. But I think Zeppelin has substantially more and their greatest ones, to me are better. And Purple has like twice as many records maybe more... For that reason and the fact that I think the musicians of Zep bring more to the party than Purple's do. And then you factor in worldwide notoriety and that's why I say that they'r not in Zeppelin's league.

Edit: I liked Clapton in Cream. But for the most part after that, except for a handful of songs thru the years, he got corny and boring. Disraeli Gears was his best offering.
