Edit: I liked Clapton in Cream. But for the most part after that, except for a handful of songs thru the years, he got corny and boring. Disraeli Gears was his best offering.

I've really only been comparing DP MKII to LZ. Man for man DP is either right there or better, IMO.

By DP MKll you mean Blackmore, Gillan, Glover, Lord and Paice?
Gillan is my favorite of all the Purple singers. But, I think he got a bit screamy and his vocals broke up a little too much. There's a live version of Child In Time that sounds like noise. That's how he got Nodes on his vocal chords.
Paice is no Bonham and John Paul Jones is a better bassist than Glover and can hold his own with Lord while playing bass with his feet. Page generated better records than Blackmore regardless of the technical factor.

I'm definitely a Bonham fan but if you listen to the DP track Fireball and aren't impressed by the sheer technical brilliance of Paice's drumming I'd be surprised.

Actually Paice is a single bass drum player except for Fireball where he was after that particular feel... the difference between Paice and Bonham is Zep's "tight but loose" feel and Paice's jazz player precision.

Bonham had so much character in his drumming.. the power and dynamics, his patience, his grooves, even the tone of his drums. He was The Man

Moby Dick is a great track, the 40-minutes live drum solos were a bit self-indulgent though. Not sure how much of Bonzo's Montreux is him and how much is Page playing with triggering after the event...

I mean. Yea. Humans are generally overrated. Especially the musician rock star variety. And as is anything in life it’s always about timing and luck. Why do some great musicians “make it” while others on the same level don’t. Timing. Good luck.

But there are rare exceptions. I think Claptons one of them. What you can’t do is apply today’s standards to yesterday’s music. Are there young cats out there who can play “better” than Clapton? Technically. Of course. But did they blaze the trail that he did. Did they help to show the way. Clapton would tell anyone who listened it was about the old blues masters. It came from the blues. Listen to the blues. And so many of us did. And the music progressed to where it is today because of that lesson.

He is one of those pillars that rock music was built on. He’s been on the world stage being over analyzed for almost 60 years now. That can’t have been easy. Give the guy his due.

So as far as how this 60 year old man feels about Clapton. Nothing but respect.
Excuse me I’m gonna go put on Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs…..
