Is Deep Purple in the same league with Led Zeppelin?

I don't think JPJ is anywhere close to being equal to Lord on keys while playing bass with his feet.
Page vs Blackmore Page gets extra credit for being great in the studio.
Glover vs JPJ Glover gets absolutely no credit for being good in the studio.
Not saying Glover is better but he's a bit underrated in this thread. Aside from the masterpiece of the Ramble On bassline I think his basslines stack up ok against JPJ as far as hard rock basslines go.

True. Although I feel sorry for Glover more. Producer, songwriter on some great songs and some great precision lines like highway star and gets zero credit.
I agree but Glover would be the first to downplay his abilities and accomplishments. A very humble guy. In my top three.
I was just playing along to some Deep Purple the other day--some of his bass lines are quite challenging (At least for me)--some are less so--but they all sound great.
And really the question this thread asked is not who is better--but if they are in the same league.
No I don't either. What I meant to say is that he can hold his own with John Lord on keys
and he can also play bass with his feet. ...and I read somewhere that he can practically play any stringed instrument. and he's a wizard in the control room.. I don't dislike Purple and not trying to hate on them. I like Purple The Gillan version is the one I consider to be the real Deep Purple. But I love the Book of Taliesan record. The Shield is an amazing song.. river deep, mountain high! I wore that tape out.
But, we're talking about being Led Zeppelin's equal or better..... Pound for pound, song for song, man for man... they the kings of rock and roll.. Deep Purple is great. But, I don't think they're quite in THAT league..

Drum solos were a thing back then.. Every drummer did one and everyone in the crowd expected one..
Bonham's was amazing actually. And he didnt strike me as the type of guy that would put his name on a sequenced or triggered drum track.
Both are iconic bands. Like everything else, it comes down to personal preference. Glover is an incredible bass player! He (et. al) fit that band like a glove... no pun intended.
Same can be said about JPJ. I think Purple was more along the lines of progressive rock, where Zep played a variety of different genres. JPJ is the man in my book when it comes to bass playing. Groove more than technicality. But that's what floats my boat. Many others that would disagree with me on who's better. But it's not a case of if the bands are in the same league... it's what you enjoy listening to. Zep for me, by far. Doesn't necessarily make them better, though. I'm going to go listen to the Lemon Song and call it a night. Sweet dreams.

Yes I see what you'r getting at.. And of its own, music is not a contest. Understood.
Maybe I misinterpreted the meaning of "in the same league"? It's obvious that they'r both high profile, world class rock bands. So, in that sense they'r in the same league. But, there are 100 other bands in that league. And I think both Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin are in a league beyond the standard respectable working band. Easy to agree they are in the league of 10 or 12 super groups. But I think Zeppelin continues on to the next league of elite bands of classic rock era, say there's 5 of them... It's going to getting sticky moving to the next. So Im just going to stop there and say that Zeppelin legitimately belongs in league with the top5 elite bands of the classic rock era. It's obvious that The Beatles are one of the others. Can you justify Deep Purple belongs there? Or that Zeppelin doesn't? It reminds me a little of getting into the R n R hall of fame. Both Zep and Purple are in, Zep 26 years ago in 1995. Purple in 2016.

I don't think either are in the league of The Beatles. Nobody is. I'm not a HUGE Beatles fan but they stand alone. If you want to put Zeppelin in with the Stones (I don't) and The Who? I can see it.
I didn't necessarily put zep on par with the beatles.. just that they'r both in the top 5. I left it at the top 5 bcs l feel that zeppelin holds a spot in that league. I even stopped at mentioning the others. But, it's obvious that the beatles would be one of them. Ok, lll say Hendrix is another. But, back to the topic of the thread.. Do you really think that Deep Purple is in this league??
I think Purple is in the same league as Zeppelin. I don't think either belong with the Beatles. I don't think anyone belongs with the Beatles. Hendrix, The Who, the Stones are in their own league.
You must be crazy to say that JPJ can hold his own with Jon Lord! That is like saying that Adam Clayton can hold his own with John Entwistle. It's fairytale material.
I don't know Matty4 well, at all really, so this is a generalization. Zeppelin fans almost need for every member to be the best at what they do. Most diehard fans of any band are the same.
I think zeppelin is in the top 5 bands of the classic rock era. If the beatles are arguably number one, that means they are in the top 5. I dont think the stones or the who are top 5.. top 10? Ok.. that's probably where l would group Deep Purple also. But the whole point of this thread really requires you to establish what league Led Zeppelin is in, to then determine if Deep Purple is in that same league? Im saying zep is justifiably in the league of the top 5 classic rock bands. And realistically, l just don't see Purple in that league.
My thoughts entirely, I have plenty of experience of debating with Zep fan boys in the UK, they are very blinkered my friend!
No, l don't feel that way at all. Zeppelin is a case of where the band as a whole is greater than its parts. If any of them would contend as a "best," l think that would only be Bonham. But, still, there's too many great drummers to say who's best. Its just a different kind of great at that point.
