Come to think of it, if you were to use walking into GC on a Saturday(pre-covid)as any kind of indicator, you’d be more likely to hear the intros of “Smells Like Teen Spirit” or “Enter Sandman”, still, after 30 years.

Is Deep Purple in the same league with Led Zeppelin?

DP is better than LZ when it comes to the lead singer. Gillan, Coverdale or Hughes was far better than Plant.
DP is better than LZ when it comes to charisma of the guitarist. Page was brilliant but Blackmore was the epitome of charisma.

I know in Soviet Union Deep Purple bore a cult status while Led Zeppelin didn't.
I, for one, never been able to force myself to love Led Zeppelin. Now in my late fifties I think I understand 'em better and even like a son or three, but that's about it. Comparing with Deep Purple their music always seemed to me too dirty, ruffled and disordered.

they each had there own style and fans but even though some of Plant and Pages best came from stuff they ripped off other musicians mainly Willie Dixon they had far more success outside of europe than deep purple did
i agree not in the same league. However I feel the exact opposite of you. DP come from a jazz background. High energy. For me LZ seems to wallow.
It’s probably been said but at the time, certainly. Zeppelin have endured better in terms of album sales and credibility but when they were both out there doing their best work, both were in the same league.

The guitarist, Jimi Bell, came within a coin toss of replacing Jake E.Lee in Ozzys band (Zakk won out in the end) and currently plays In autograph.
The Drummer, B.J. Zampa, plays in the current lineup of Dokken and toured with Yngwie malmsteen .
My friend Mike Gill, the singer, is a member of a lesser known, but still great group Livesay..So there are no slouches in that band for sure.

Burn has a lot of filler? I disagree. I think it's a consistent album.
I have to agree about originality. If you compare Led Zeppelin debut with Deep Purple In Rock, LZ I is a quite derivative blues rock material, while In Rock is much more original and unique musically.
Led Zeppelin, like the Beatles, and Grateful Dead, were infinitely more popular, than they were good.
Where I grew up, all of the Stoners liked Zeppelin, while the Musicians preferred Deep Purple.

Funny thread. I was into both bands equally as a teenager in the late 70s, but 40 years on I can only still listen to Deep Purple.
I haven’t ever really analysed it, but I suppose it’s the combination of Hammond B3, Ian Paice’s drumming style and the bluesier vocals that kept me interested.
