Is making a strat- bass a good idea?

Uh, it's a saying, no? Like "...for government work". Unless you're contesting the merit of it, and yeah, the hs is a lot more teley than stratty.
Anyway, my take is "just do it", and here are some links (but @FatStrings's creation shown above is hard to beat IMO):

I dream of an oversized strat body mated to a 5-string jazz neck modified to 6 in-line small tuners. Ooh yeah... A giant strat: only conventional six string bass I'd consider having.

Although he didn't make a 6 banger, @FatStrings did build up an over sized 34" scale strat bass found FatStrings Oversized Strat Bass | TalkBass.com
Turned it into an HSS.

I'd totally forgotten! Kudos for digging it out.
Oh, and, to the OP: the logical option for pickups would be three single coil P bass pickups (AKA SCPB, unexpectedly enough), either with a RWRP middle one, or all three of 'em noiseless (I'd go split coil).

That means id have to making a custom pickguard...0r i could use no pickguard over the pickups and only have it for the lower horn and knobs/ seitches

Not really, but sure Cataldo makes some killer basses.

Seems to me it's been done - P basses.

That was sort of my thought. 2 cutaways, non offset waist. dimensions are a little different, but overall aesthetic is pretty similar

Here's my Les Paul subscale conversion. I'm pretty sure a Strat would be just as good and look pretty cool too.
