Is making a strat- bass a good idea?

I know fender has jaguar, tele, mustang, and jazzmaster styled basses but what about a custom strat body bass? Bad idea or fun project

(I'm assuming you mean making a Strat-shaped body, scaled up for bass, correct? You weren't planning on using an actual Strat body, right?)

No no i know about those basses but i want to build one my self. Strat body and pickguard with lipstick pickups. And a preamp inside where the tremelo goes.

Ive most of the parts alredy. Though ipl probubly end up fabricating a frettles beck c just for it. Also planning on making a resostrat in the next few years.

I'd do it but if it was me, I'd probably use a mix of different color Lace Sensors and then wire up a 7-way switch.

1. Bridge
2. Bridge + Middle
3. Middle
4. Middle + Neck
5. Neck
6. Bridge + Neck
7. All three pickups

Pickups :

1. Bridge -> Lace Blue or Silver -> To contribute bite
2. Middle -> Lace Red -> Default position for a balanced bass sound (Birdsong uses Lace Reds)
3. Neck -> Lace Blue or Red -> To contribute mud or "boom"

I'd also wire it up to a PTB system like on the G&L Strat copies, or the L2000. Use that second tone knob as your passive bass roll-off. Or hey, you know just get a preamp.

I think strat basses are better looking than a P, go figure. There are a million custom shapes, but a strat is already nearly perfect ergonomically. The three pup config gives you a lot of options tonally. Buy a Warmouth P neck and make the body.

Sounds cool, and possible. At the real "basic" level all you'd need to do is change the nut, and bridge; however, I'm fairly sure it's more complex. E.g. you'd need to check pickup response (if strat pickups would distort the signal too much, for example), as well as it guitar neck truss rods can withhold bass string pressure (assuming bass strings exert more force on the headstock than guitar strings), as well as seeing if you can mount a bass bridge on it (you have the tremolo system to play with too; would be real cool if it had a vibrato like the bass VI :]). Still, seems really doable.

P.S. the tuning pegs as well...so I guess you'd be forced to swap out the neck too
