Is Modulus still in Business?

I heard (about the time this thread started) from an industry insider, that Modulus had been selling off its machinery. Doesn't seem to be any indication that's false.

Modulus isn't going any where and they have always been a small operation.

It will be interesting to see which extreme it correct. My money is more towards what Pacman heard.

If this is the case, I don't see any reason for them to be not forthcoming about their situation. If it were me and my company was dissolving, I'd want to leave a legacy of as much goodwill as possible and secrecy does not create goodwill.

....unless you're sitting on deposits for unfilled orders that you intend to make unsecured creditors in your bankruptcy proceedings...............

I started this thread ages ago and all I know is I would be asking for my deposit back if I had an order thru a retailer. Good luck if you have a deposit directly with Modulus.

I had 2 Modulus basses a month ago, and I sold/traded them both. Great basses but Modulus as a company is by far the worst bass manufacturer I have dealt with in almost 30 years of playing.

I can respect your feeling about Modulus as a company, but I see no reason to liquidate my basses which I love and have unique abilities just because of their business practices. Their going out of business or otherwise screwing up in no way affects how well my basses play. I feel no shame in rocking a Modulus on stage.

only now we will be calling that rocking a "vintage" Modulus on stage...

Absolutely agree with you. Modulus basses are some of the very best made IME.

I personally just got jerked around so badly that I made a personal statement not to play them. I have other great basses to play, do no big deal The company is/was not unethical in any way, just amazingly poorly run. I'm sure the odd customer can say the same about Sadowsky, Fodera, Fender, etc.

If I didn't have the issues I did, I would gladly still be playing at least one Modulus and hoping their downfall ultimately made their value increase dramatically.

I really just wish they would do the right thing and issue a statement letting their customers know what is up.

+1 on all of the above. I'm really sorry to hear you had such troubles, I have followed them here. I have to say that my 1991 Q6 TBX neck does have a bow in it, and with no truss rod, I'm kind of stuck. Luckily, it's still reasonably playable throughout most of the neck, but I had hoped that they would be accessible to work on it and make it perfect. But, the tone is so ridiculous, that it's worth putting up with. I will probably sell my bolt on Q6, which does have one of the nicest necks I've played on any bass, but only because I have to mitigate debt and I will be very sorry to see it go.

But, yes, they should absolutely be more transparent about what's up. I don't think they're a publicly held company that needs to worry about the effect of disclosure on stock prices.

I was so depressed when my '91 Q5 developed a twist, then a bow. That thing was deadly before it started changing. Jerry Dorsch did a great job of repairing the twist, but I sold it in a fit of GAS, was later able to re-aquire it, and it had a ton of forward bow. So I gave up. Tried a late model Q5 with truss rod and barts -- just not the same thing.

My totally uninformed guess on modulus restructuring: all of this seems consistent with shifting neck manufacturing out of the country. Could have been some clashes with CA environmental regulators about VOCs ... who knows. Best of luck to them.

That speaks volumes. :ninja:

[what if?]

Working on the assumption that the demise of Modulus, arguably the largest manufacturer of carbon fiber necked basses, is imminent, there will be a huge void in the carbon neck market. There's Zon and Moses, but they're not really the same thing. Will we see more Status basses stateside? Will we see increased output from Jerry Dorsch and Geoff Gould? There was something on Facebook showing someone playing a Joe Perlman bass. Will he fill the void? Maybe another upstart? Chinese carbon necked basses?

[/what if?]

Is there any chance that a good luthier could take off the fretboard and router it for a truss rod. (Or two) and not mess up the tone?

Once again, for solidarity I played my Q5 for last night's gig and will bust her out for tonight's gig in Orleans...........................................................(also, the strings on my Roscoe SKB 3005 are too dead to play tonight.. :D).
