Is Modulus still in Business?

Even as of 5 years ago the Moses necks I felt where not stable, I had a major issue and have seen others recently (Although I'm not sure how old the neck was).

I'm on my third neck. The first was amazing for about a year and a half before it started twisting. The replacement was chunky, clumsy... terrible. By the time everything was resolved my bass had travelled from the east coast to the west coast 3x and I had to get some small compensation for all of the freight. It took so long that I had to buy a Zon 5/2 to complete a recording project I was producing at the time.

That says something...

If Stephen changes his formula He should go very public about it, because His older stuff is just not good and lots of folks have gone public about it.

I have/had a couple of Status necks and they are pretty comparable to Modulus.

On a fresh build the Modulus sets right away, the Status acted a little more like wood and took a couple of days to settle into place. Once it did...It was just as stable as a Modulus.

My experiences are similar with yours. Status being closest to modulus. I've had basses from Status, Moses necked jazz, Steinberger, Modulus, and Zon. My Moses developed a hump that eventually led me to pitch the neck. The two that are of the higher build quality IMHO are Zon and Modulus. I currently have one Zon and two Modulus basses that have performed flawlessly for years. My VJ is 10 years old and hasn't budged at all.

It's an unfortunate situation Modulus is in. Ill be happily playing my Modulus basses and purchasing more from Zon in the future. It's important for me to support the companies that help me create my music.

It just looked like something from my era, and it was. Sometimes figured maple is really pretty, but a little narrow for a full bookmatch. So, we put a 'multilam' down the center, giving it a thru-body look. I like the classy looking honeyburst too. I hope you like it, I think the Q4 has a great tone with the 35" scale. I know it's not popular with the 4-string set to deviate from the classic 34" scale length, but I think it has a great grand piano tone.

In about '94 i played a Q4 at green valley music in watsonville that was strung with maxima golds. I was heartbroken that i couldnt afford it, such a great sound.

What exactly sucks about Modulus? Dude got his bass back. In his words, it was the last thing to ship before they locked up. What, exactly, do you object to?

If you can read this thread and not think they sucked in how they treat(ed) their customers I don't know what else to say. I'm one of the very agitated people that put thousands into their products only to be ignored and taken for granted for years. I've since moved on to a company that actually cares about their base - the people that actually keep them in business.

Your research and interest in my non-bass hobbies, financial status and past bass deals is super creepy, but in any case I did get my bass back as you kindly articulated above. And Modulus makes/made some great basses. No argument there.

I got my bass back after many months, many unreturned VM and emails and after more than a few broken promises after I happened to get them on the phone. My experience with Modulus was very poor. To answer a question from your disturbingly detailed post about my perceived wealth, hobbies and bass buying/selling/trading history, my crappy customer service experience is why I care. Wow.... I am expressing my opinion based on an actual experience on an Internet forum. Craziness.

I read the thread. Still don't get it. They never had a direct-to-the-consumer business model. Was never their style. It usually isn't.

According to Rich Hoeg (former Modulus Luthier) who recently set up a Vintage Bassstar Fretless J for me, "as time passed at Modulus the "thousand ladies dancing," became more like a coupla hundred."

He was referring to a change in how these Mod Necks were manufactured.
