Is plugging a head into a power conditioner bad?

Thanks for answering. I actually used to plug in my power amp directly to the wall and everything else to a power strip, but I simplified this process by getting a power conditioner. I didn't notice any difference in the sound of my amp though. So I'm going to operate business as usual assuming there's no difference. Thanks again bongo. :)

You will most likely be totally fine in the majority of circumstances. But it just takes one time where you plug into a poor power source and things start shutting down and you've got no bass rig or PA. Hopefully you carry a DI box just in case.

Being that for many years I played with bands that are paid fairly well to entertain an event. The person paying you expects you and your gear to perform "flawlessly". They don't much care that a poor source of power has rendered all of a portion of your gear unusable to the point of interfering with the event. While we've added clauses in our contracts to make sure proper power is provided the reality is there are circumstances that you have to deal with, that means protecting your gear and your good reputation.

For that reason I have listened to these guys that know what they're doing. I make sure we find home runs to connect our power amps, carry line testers and scout out a new venue prior to the band setting up. In really poor environments we've hired sound companies that have the proper gear to tap directly into the main power source of the building when neccessary or provide proper generators.

Sure I've had to compromise and plug all PA amps and backline into a single breaker on occassion but at least we have exhausted all our options and know we could have serious issues, in that case we down size the best we can. To set your rig up like this when you can simply runs two power cord out the back of the rack just seems silly and lazy, hoping nothing goes wrong when you can insure that it doesn't.

I'm no EE just a gigging bassist sharing some things that have helped me along the way.

Generally it's best not to insult the intelligence of people who say things you don't understand. :)

The deal is that the $5.98 power strip does not have enough parts or processes inside to interfere with your amp's current draw. The typical "fancy" rackmount conditioner does have an array of parts and processes that can bottleneck your current draw, and in addition they do not provide most of the benefits that their advertisements would lead you to believe.

There may be exceptions to both of those descriptions, and there certainly are many instances where the benefits can outweigh the costs, but otherwise I hope this condensed version of the "cheap strip vs. rack conditioner" discussion is more understandable.

I have played bass for well over 35 years in more bands and studios than I care to even try to remember. I currently work for both a studio and a label on the West coast. I am a bass player. Nothing more.

To this day, I don't have a clue about the whats and whatfors of what makes my equipment work. Frankly, I don't care. It either works or I call the amp tech to make it work. I don't "fix em - I drive em".

And, for the last 15 pages, there has been a completely ridiculous argument and the physics of what will and will not work. My OPINION, after years of using a power conditioner is that NO, it will not hurt in any way, shape, or form - unless you misuse it in some fashion.

You are indeed, correct, about my "lack of understanding" of what makes things work. Never claimed otherwise. However, the "average" bass player doesn't need a course in Electrical Engineering at MIT to make a point.

Sometimes we need to tell ourselves that we are musicians - not Engineers.

The answer to that "whatis misuse?" question does demand some technical expertise, and there have been some bass players with such technical knowledge giving solid advice in that regard.

It's unfortunate that some take offense at suggestions that power "conditioners" are superfluous pieces of gear, but that's life.
 
Great. I don't want to be a tech geek just a decent bass player. You'll be suprised that if you (everyone) pays enough attention and is well read on this stuff you can avoid situations or potential problems before they happen.

Me too. I don't want to have to worry about this stuff, but you've provided some great food for thought. I especially liked the idea about having the venue make sure they provide an adequate power supply. Also adding a simple plug tester is on my immediate list of things to do.

Curious Bob, have you run any tests with your power amps on this type of scenario? Whether or not they perform better (watt/volume wise) running through a conditioner/power strip/wall socket.
 
I didnt say the ear, I mentioned a set of ears, connected to a brain. Not to infer intelligence but psycho-acoustics.
There are all kinds of things you can hear but not measure with any piece of gear. How do you measure rocking? How do you quantify totally going off? When someone plays a total clunker of a note, everyone (except the tone deaf) knows it. how can you measure that? (and there are in key/in tune clunkers!)

The ear/brain can interpret the sound in the room and will eliminate early reflections or rather will add them to the first impulse from which they derive. On the recording you wont decode the early reflections the same way so you will hear the early reflections as hash/chatter and flutter echo. Bane of home studio recordings.

You are setting up a straw man argument here, since we are now talking about the interpretation of data, rather than the gathering of it. This is so far off point that it's a separate discussion. I maintain that we cannot interpret or process that which we cannot detect.

Okay, go ahead and design a bass guitar using nothing but measurements and your great test equipment. Good luthiers know how to use their god given talents, and ears.

As anybody else, I include my ears as my most valuable test equipment. This is, however, another redirection of the discussion away from its point. Everything that makes a bass great can be measured, whether it is the resonant response of a great piece of wood (a thoroughly interesting mechanical problem with lots of precedent in FEA and modal analysis), the dimensional accuracy of the construction, or the final touches that don't affect tone but convey "quality" in the way that matters to everybody. I would never argue against the philosophically definable "quality" of anything. However, I agree with Bob Lee: I would ask you to build a bass beside me without measurements. Keep in mind, we're not talking anymore about sitting with some software and an oscilloscope, but also geometric, mechanical, and physical measurements. Luthiers combine these measurements with *experience* and skill, so that they know *which* measurements matter.

Well, I have played bass guitar and other musical instruments for 36 years. I have written hundreds of songs, been in dozens of bands, recorded hundreds of songs for other people, done sound for thousands of bands at thousands of shows. Used to run a PA company (QSC amps were great then as now!) so I am not without some experience.

You clearly have a lot of experience, which of course is to your credit. Why, then, do you oppose some technical discussion aimed at answering a question relevant to your work and experience? The intent of the discussion is to reach a helpful, complete answer to the question. This requires some technical aspects, and only gets more technical when forum members try to undermine the facts. Rather than being a helpful, clear answer, the discussion degrades and the answer is obscured. I'll reiterate what I've said in a few other threads where the technical side of the discussion caused controversy: What do people like Bob Lee, Bill Fitzmaurice, agedhorse, and many other technical experts have to gain by helping out here? They offer clear answers based soundly in fact, then are very willing to expound upon the facts when asked. Their motives are to spread knowledge. Why oppose this, or undermine it by obscuring and intentionally ignoring facts?

This is absolutely a bass guitarist forum. Specifically, we discuss amplification in this forum; one of the critical tools that forum members use to make joy and money through music. I believe that by better understanding our tools, we can use them fully to further our musical goals.

We are privy to very advanced technology in the music industry. Much of the time, we can treat it as a "black box" that "just works". But sometimes it is incredibly helpful to understand at least a portion of the science behind acoustics, electronics, and audio processing. So, whether discussing power conditioners or LPs vs. CDs, an intelligent discussion will acknowledge both the quantitative/factual as well as the qualitative/ineffable factors. It is when parties of the discussion intentionally obscure or ignore the boundaries between these two that both sides get frustrated and the discussion ceases to be productive.

Thus, I acknowledge the infinite ability to explain phenomena with scientific and quantitative means. However, I respect that there are many things which cannot be expressed numerically. Signals, however, are one of the best understood engineering/scientific/mathematical entities in the world. There is nobody who understands signals who would agree with an argument that humans are poor signal processors. Interpretation is a different story, but is still limited by fidelity (ie. we cannot interpret what we cannot sense).

I am known for one thing among my friends and associates. I dont take kindly to being told how to behave. How about you mind your manners son?

I'll keep that in mind if I ever feel tempted to do so. However, I would expect the same respect in return, without the undertone of superiority. I stated in the last post that you would find the conversation more rewarding if you invested a bit more in learning, rather than ignoring, information that would help you enjoy music more. Instead of dismissing the technical, let it augment the ineffable that you appreciate. You might enjoy the music (and this discussion) more.

I'm convinced that based on Bluesbob's continued posting and the fact that he's clearly ignoring what's already been said many times over in this thread, that he's simply trolling. He's doing a great job of it too.

Well thank you for that. But all I'm doing is presenting an alternative viewpoint. I have no idea why anyone would think I'm ignoring anything that's been written here. I've tried to answer, as well as I can, those viewpoints which reflect the commonly held beliefs of the objectivist crowd (and their measurements) with arguments against. Please remember that I wasn't the one who introduced the subject of audio. And I didn't make any statements of opinion concerning analog vs. digital and say they were "facts".

BUT I don't understand how you can say "no" when there are circumstances that Plugging a head into a power conditioner is not a good idea.

Because the OP wasn't using a power conditioner. If you read on he says he's using a simple Furman rack-mount power strip with a surge protector. The only time the surge protector comes into play is in the event of a power surge. There is no isolation transformer to "condition" anything, or impede current flow. That's why.

I already made reference to the fact that companies like Furman, though I'm not picking on them as it's a ubiquitous practice, are now slapping the name 'power conditioner' on anything and everything, making it impossible for the average consumer to know what it is that he's getting.

Yeah, power strip != surge suppressor != power conditioner != UPS != prime power source.

Interesting but meandering thread. I'm coming from a different angle - I'm investigating investing in an electrical power supply protection device because of an incident that happened to a good friend and lead guitarist. A couple of weeks ago, he had a gig at a local, outdoor fair. The stage was a flatbed trailer, with a metal ground strip running its length. I can't say how the power was brought to the flatbed, but I do know that shortly after the band began playing, a huge electrical spike ran through my friend's NEW Fender Twin, popping transistors, burning resistors, and frying a few circuit board traces till they lifted off the board. I've seen the amp's guts, and they're not pretty. (So much for amp manufacturers doing all they need to do to protect their products.) The PA amp was also smoked, and a microphone stand became welded to the trailer's metal ground strip. Some miscellaneous effects pedals also took a beating. Now, he sometimes borrows my bass rig for outdoor gigs, where his bassist needs a little more oomph, and I have to say I'm really glad this wasn't one of those times. Naturally, I'm thinking "Power Conditioner", or one of the other names of these supposedly protective devices, to sit between my expensive rack gear and the AC receptacle. Is a simple surge suppressor/power strip all I really need? It seems too easy . . .
