Ok so first not trolling to try to sell on Craig's list or any thing like that. Looking for some one that knows more than me about 70's jazz basses. Ok been though this before, seen other go though it. Serial number says 72, Jazzes didn't have 3 bolt necks in 72. So all you early Fender guys chime in! What year do you think this bass is and is it even a real early 70's Jazz bass?

Also.. Fender site says 300,000 SN's spanned from somewhere between '69 & '73

I'd guess it's a '72 plate based on the serial number, but that contradicts the user above saying 3 bolts didn't show up until '74.

You have to upgrade your membership to ask about value. The bass is an absolute beauty. I would love to have a genuine Seventies Fender Jazz myself.

OP is thinking about buying so they're fine. We cannot give price quotes to non-supporting members on gear people are selling, it's mostly due to it looking like a free F/S ad.

OP I am probably going high here but I would put the value in mid to high teens, $1500-$1800, but that is in USD.

The serial # on the neck comes up 1972 on websites I have checked so you people out dating it using the serial #? 368811

After the CBS purchase of Fender in 1965, the factory switched to a new serial sequence with numbers that continued the same general format used prior to the takeover. These are generally referred to as F series due the large Fender branded F on the neckplates of the era. This period also saw a switch from the orginal four-bolt neckplate of the '60s to a three-bolt neckplate in just one example of cost-saving costs introduced under CBS.

70s Fender pricing has gone bonkers. A quick ebay check for '74 and '75 originals shows asking prices of $3500 and up but none of those have sold. There was an unloaded body and damaged unloaded neck which sold for over $1300 combined! A minty '74 lefty sold for $2510 plus shipping. The bass in the OP looks pretty minty so $2500 would seem to be the high number.

Can't vouch because I'm no expert...but here's my source:

Jazz Bass Timeline 1960-1982

Sometime in 1974 Fender moves the finger rest from under the G string to above the E string now making it a thumb rest. Black pickguards start to replace tortoise shell guards around this time. Maple fingerboards on the Jazz now feature pearl block inlays and white binding.

In 1975 Fender starts using three bolt necks with bullet truss rods on all Jazz basses. This feature is never used on Precision basses.
