Is this a sin? Have I made a Monster?

Not enough bling.

Thanks everyone! I really thought I would get some RIC purists claiming I destroyed a perfectly good instrument. Glad to see most people dig the idea.

I know most people don't like racing stripes, but I've always been a fan and do enjoy having a break from the same texture, some sort of contrast. All the binding, stripes, and inlays were sprayed with silver and then flaked (the inlays aren't flaked). So the entire bass is flaked and reflective, the purple just overwhelms the silver so it doesn't appear to sparkle as much.

I have two more pictures that failed to upload earlier. You can more closely see the matching silver inlays in these.

I consider myself to be quite a Rickenbacker fan boy. I have now amassed a collection of 11 basses and 1 guitar from them, including this...thing.... As much as I love their instruments, some times their lack of flair leaves something to be desired. So I was lucky to find a 2006 Jetglo 4003 that was a factory blemish. Apparently the finish didn't cure correctly and it turned into a gummy mess and then the case stuck to it. It was quite a mess and needed some love to get back into tip top shape. Black is boring though, I have 2 Jetglo 4003s already, this had the opportunity to be something more.

I recently saw the limited edition Babuik Candy Apple Purple 4003 and while I loved the idea, it wasn't enough. It needed more flake! More purple! More racing stripes! After about of a month of work and multiple layers of paint, flake, and clear I finally finished this crazy creation! I know some RIC purists may hate it, but I love the thing so much!View attachment 4144235 View attachment 4144236 View attachment 4144237
That looks like a very fun bass! (If Bootsy was gonna play a Ric...).
Seriously though, nice job.

Courageous work indeed!
(... though I'm unsure what was braver: the actual refin, or posting pictures here on TB?)
