Is this to be expected from a "900 dollar" instrument?

Keep it or send it back?

That control cavity BS is not a flaw...someone has been messing with it, you have been done!
I absolutely hate any brand new product that looks badly finished...messed with etc. Not sure I beleive what I'm seeing here........bin it.
My new $200 Squier was pristine in every way when I opened the box.

That barely looks like a $200 instrument. Did they route the control cavity, realise the cover wouldn't fit especially well and then hog wood off the finished body using a blunt chisel? Sure, it means the cover probably fits better but that doesn't inspire any confidence in the rest of the instrument in terms of tolerances and fit. The odd finish defects don't look good either.

Wow...now that's service. Maybe bring it up to your friend tactfully that if they have been receiving SR805 and SR806 basses in similar condition, that it's not normal to have that model Ibanez with those finish issues. You'll be doing your friend a favor if anything being that he has one just like it.

That finish reminds me of the times I've done rattle can finishes and thought "eh, the paint will just fill in those bits, I don't need to sand any further". And then all the wibbles, gulches and scratches telegraph up through the finish...

If Ibanez were going for a more rustic, thin finish then I guess this is the proof. If you believe that the finish on an instrument stifles the tone of the instrument then the thinner the finish the better!

As long as the battery issue isn't also in the replacement and the cavity doesn't look like a dog chewed on the edge of it. I could probably live with a few dents, as long as they're not understating the condition. :) I know the SR500 and SR505 in mahogany finish has a notoriously bad finish that wears off very, very easily (reason why I got the SR700 instead) - I don't believe the SR800/805 has that brittle of a finish as you don't often hear about it and none of the used SR800s I've seen have worn off finishes like I have with used SR500s.

Let's hope they aren't understating the "dents" . It is a good sign that the guy put the quotation marks in when he said "grain "dents""
He did specifically state that the control cavity is not chiseled out
