Isolating problem speakers - Yorkville 8x8 ?

If the tears are not in the foam surrounds, you can fix them with plain old Bounty and Elmers glue. Tear (not cut) bits of towel larger than the damaged areas, coat in glue, and apply with fingers, smoothing as you go. Touch up with flat black spraypaint when dry, if you care to. If it's the foam surrounds that are going, surrounds can be had for a buck or so, and there are tutorials on Youtube for the procedure. Rattling or buzzy speakers- look at the surrounds first.

MI use accordian cloth type surrounds, not foam. The suspension compliance is a key part of the design. I wouldn't be inclined to replace the surround only unless I knew it was something at least close. I think complete recone kits are the way to go here.

Foam surrounds are used in stereo speakers because they don't have to take the beating and react to the wild dynamics instrument speakers do. Recorded music doesn't vary in level much at all, maybe 3db at most. Classical might be one exception.

Well that solves that, replace 7 speakers (at which point I might as well do all 8) or look for a new cab. I'm assuming these speakers aren't worth getting re-coned?

You shouldn't assume anything! :) There is a guy in Markham, (404 onto Woodbine just north of Steeles) Santon Audio. Bob has been looking after any driver problems I have had since the early Seventies. I have nothing but praise for Bob's work.
