Isolating problem speakers - Yorkville 8x8 ?

Hello everyone

Newb here, figured I'd register since this forum comes up every time I google anything bass related. Seems like a nice, civil place with many knowledgeable people.

I'm a novice bassist but have been playing guitar for 11 years or so, so although my gear knowledge is quite extensive, bass gear is somewhat new territory to me. Solid state wattage in the thousands, 18" speakers (or 8" for that matter)... All news to me.

On to the point: my question is about a speaker cabinet. I run an Acoustic collaboration series B4 or occasionally model 370 through a Yorkville 8x8. The cab makes quite a racket when amps are turned up past bedroom volume, and it sounds like a great rattling coming from one or more of the speakers. I can't articulate what the noise is, just a rattling buzzing sound. I'm wondering if any amp experts can teach me how to isolate the problem speaker(s) so I can see what needs repairing or replacing. Is there a standard procedure to hear them safely one at a time, or some quick secret shortcut? It's nearly impossible to tell which speakers are making the sound though I can get the rattling to diminish if I jam my pinky through the grille and gently press down on the cone of one of the upper left speakers. None of them appear to be physically ripped BTW, I'm thinking it's an issue with some component of the speaker.

Anyhow, apologies for what I'm assuming was an unneccesarily long-winded question, any insight would be appreciated.

Yep, pushing on the cones to see if any voice coils are rubbing is one thing to check. Next, plug your speaker cable into the cab and touch a 9 volt battery's terminals to the tip and sleeve on the plug on the free end. All the cones should jump in or out together depending on which way you flip the battery. Any that don't move are bad, or at least have bad wiring inside. If some move in while others move out they are reverse polarity and wires need to flipped + and - wherever needed to get them all moving together.

That is sigworthy, isn't it.

Please be nice. Just once, ok? Thanks!

Yes, you can get great info here.

Thor, I'm perplexed!! I've been pondering on this post for the whole evening and through a few beers. I still can't come up with a reason for your comments. As the one who posted most, I assume that they are directed at me BUT I simply do not understand why. I made a comment on the OP much as Will did and I asked, in a quirky way, where the OP lived in my country. If he lived near me I would have helped him to solve his problem personally. So please, explain to me why you submitted such a post.

Edit: And yes, even if it is against the rules, I'm questioning you AND I'm cross!!!! I've invested good money and even more time into trying to guide AND educate the folks who need help. This is from an EE of more years than I care to remember and a bass player of half a century!

Paul, I'm not trying to speak for Thor, but note his "sigworthy" post came at the same minute as your "country" post, so he probably did not see that--and was instead saying your previous post was grimly humorous and sadly true.

Additionally he's had to do a lot of babysitting and ban-hammering recently, so he probably said "play nice for once" as a general comment to the peanut gallery, not to you specifically.

Thor, I hope I got that right. Don't tase me bro!

Thanks for the intervention bongo. I have to admit I do get upset fairly easily. Two strokes do that to you. However I still don't understand where I wasn't being "nice". We all know how uncivil some threads can become. I've always conducted myself with as much patience and civility as befits my up bringing and professional education. Thor and the other mods do a excellent, needed and somewhat thankless job and I respect them. I just want to know why "the God of Thunder" threw a thunderbolt at me.

Hey Paul, on this end, I think it also reads as a bit of a humerous response to your joke on civility. More of a blanket statement and doesn't seem to be directed at you personally. Even in threads that do get heated, you usually seem to show patience and civility. I think it may have been a bit of a "preemptive strike" if you will, at the peanut gallery. That's how I saw it upon first reading anyway.

Hence the 10 mile tree analogy. :D

Paul, I'm with you on this one. Unless a post(s) was deleted, I am at a total loss in determining what brought that on. :hmm:

Lightning can strike up to 10 miles from the edge of a storm........you must have been next to a tree :D

Thanks Mr B! I needed that laugh! :D Thanks too to Will and John. In future I'll carry a grounded umbrella to isolate me from the storm! :D

Meanwhile the OP STILL has a broken cabinet. If he is still around let's get to fixing it!

Over to you Herman.....
