It looks like poor Carol Kaye doesn't understand the internet

carole has said she played on those sessions and it was not uncommon for parts to be played by different players.....because jamersons version appeared on the finished track does not mean that ck did not record it too.....bob babbits article on the subject is as very good read......carole kaye has had a long and distinguished session career,and earned the respect of her peers....Wow... I have never respected Carol Kaye because of her claiming Jamerson's lines as her own. This doesn't help. I obviously don't know all of the facts, but this is a bit much
I'd prefer not to encourage illegal infringements. I'll just say that Google is a wonderful tool.
Speak of the devil, I went on eBay just a few minutes ago to search her books and found a book/CD on Jazz Improv for Guitar for $10 so I bought it. 2 minutes later I get a nice email from Carol herself thanking me for the purchase and she also attached some extra instructional info to the email. I responded back and told I was a long time admirer that she replied to, but I didn't mention this thread with people bashing her.
Sorry it's not illegal where I live. I was just making a comment that I haven't ever seen a torrent site that charges for membership. That would get you sued.
I Googled "Carol Kaye Jazz Improv" and it was about the third one down. They wanted to charge me $20 for a 10gb membership.
I won't mention any here but the biggest and most used torrent sites are 100% free. Even private trackers are usually free. I would assume the site listed is most likely not a legitimate operation (in a torrent sense).
Edit: Hence why I was a little surprised anyone would charge membership to a torrent site.
I googled that too....and right next to it my anti virus has a nifty little warning

I don't doubt her playing, I don't believe she's overrated at all. I don't believe she played on the Jamerson tracks but that's not the debate here. I just thought it was funny that she was about to Streisand herself.
I read some of the comments on freakbits, and one of the users on there posted a link to this other story that reminded him of this. I decided to check it out, and it really amazes me how ignorant some people really are. check it out:

Don't get me wrong, I can see how an elderly woman is clueless about the internet, especially torrents, but this story is just hillarious to me. If you google "facebook login", the original page mentioned is the third or fourth result, and the comments on it just blew my mind. Here's the link to that one:

I agree. I think maybe she's perceived as not having the "cool" factor of some of her peers. I bet that if Jamerson was still around and in the news for acting like a cranky old codger there would be a lot more people here jumping to his defense.
+100 she deserves so much respect.
also, the pages offering links to free dowloading of copyrighted material cover themselves on the "We dont host any torrent files", but the truth is that they are just promoting piracy.
the people supporting that kind of pages should take a look at these two articles..

I don't think that's the truth at all. BitTorrent was created for legitimate downloading purposes. Major companies use it to distribute their products. Piracy promotes piracy. It has nothing to do with the people running these sites. Arguing a website is promoting piracy by not magically stopping pirates is like saying that your at fault when someone crashes the car you built drunk.
She could be the one that gets sued if she does not watch herself. Ignorance of the law is no excuse and neither is ignorance of the internet. She should have got in touch with a lawyer before running her mouth off like that.
This is the truth. A great deal of data is available via torrenting and its a good way to get massive files accross. However I don't really think most people understand how torrenting works. For it to be shut down, every computer with a torrent host on it must be have the host removed. The reality of this is it is impossible to do. Its only made "worse" by the fact that each use of a torrent further solidifies that torrent (if you know how torrenting works this makes sense.) These kinds of things have been around since the dawn of the internet, which was itself created for the transfer of information. Its inevitable that piracy will occur, people want stuff for free.
Thats the point. They aren't the ones offering it. If I have a website with 4,523,688 torrents, I have no idea which ones are copyrighted material. If a DMCA is sent a site will take down the torrents but they are not a police force. Like I said you can not be at fault for the abuse of a product. They are not the ones offering copyrighted material, anyone could be.
And that brings the point, YOU CAN'T STOP piracy. One site has over four million torrents, one site. It is impossible. If you read the article on Wiki. 50% of internet traffic is torrenting.

You can argue ethics yes, but that does not change anything. The truth is the new buisness model that is emerging is beginning to look much better for artists where overall profits are up in the last few years for individual artists. Individual artists who feel the squeeze may not be even feeling it from piracy but simply lack of interest from their audience.
The articles you listed, such as Garrisons, I would argue that he is hardly affected by piracy. I doubt you could easily find a living Matthew Garrison torrent. If anything digital distribution has allowed people like Garrison to reach a much broader audience. Because I know for a fact that unless I drive downtown to a more niche record dealer I'm not going to find the new Garrison album, but I'm going to find it on iTunes and purchasing is a couple clicks away.
