This morning as I was waiting for my shift to end, I was browsing the local Classifieds. Now, keep in mind I live in an area with a relatively smallish population where you just don't see many instruments other that guitars and very occasionally a bass or drum set. So when I seem 4 harps for sale at $2000 plus a piece I had a little laugh with my co worker. Then he turns to me and asks "what if you had to sell all your stuff?" And then maybe having 10k in Harps isn't so odd given what I have in bass gear. Then I became alarmed at what I've spent on bass gear, then I remembered I still have a GAS list longer than a Dingwall B string. So as I type this, I swing back and forth like a metronome between laughing and crying. Thanks harp selling person for my morning crisis.
Ah, but which one? There are Celtic harps, and would you like the fancier one where you can change tuning, or should you get one in each common key? How about a nice orchestral harp, too? Then you might want a lighter one for those coffee house gigs. Maybe a trailer to haul them around? GAS in the harp world? Oh yeah . . .
Small harp story, A family friend was shot down over Belgium during W.W.2 and was hidden from the Nazi by villagers. After the war, he married a harpist. Her students couldn't get harps quickly enough. Big harps( think Harpo Mark's style!) have foot pedals for changing keys and are quite big and complicated. At the time, the big harp builder was in Chicago and had a wait time of years! So it turned out,in the area in Belgium where the husband was shot down, they built smaller harps that could be bought right away. Not sure if they are called "Celtic" harps. I remember she called them cross harp style. No foot pedals, two sets of strings crossed over, kind of like black and white keys on the piano. Much smaller than a regular concert type harp. So I can see how these harps might fetch 2 grand each! I realized the other day that I have 11 string instruments. Ouch!
D'oh! That is one of the hazards of the last hour of the graveyard shift (shift work is a cruel mistress)
Yeah we have it easy with our instrument ... what people consider over expensive at like 2000$ + it isn't even the less expensive of some classical instrument so yeah
Which is why you don't see many casual harp or other classical instrument players. Unless of course you are in a blues band, then every nimrod within a hundred miles is a harp player and wants to sit in.
hey, that looks like my old harp https://www.amazon.com/Heather-Harp-Strings-Vine-Design/dp/B000LSX0F8
