Nice cab but mesa 800 all day every day i had the oppertunity to play both of these heads though a peavy 210 and a mesa 115 with several warwick rock basses and american g&ls and a few peaveys and the mesa won every time, mesa had a much better slap sound and clean fingers sound and felt sturdier and lighter than the ampeg and whist if you really REALLY want that ampeg tone go for it but there are so many ampeg and tube sim overdrives its a little pointless im not dissing ampeg products but mesa is my cup of tea

Ok so after hearing everyone I added another choice to the mix.. The GK Mb800 ... So I will say .. Yes I want a bit monster tube head.. But right now I'm gonna get a more affordable class D so it's either prob gonna be the Mesa or the GK...

If you're not going tubes yet, there's also the Ampeg PF500/800 route. I have a PF500 for when I can't use my V-4B head...

I love Mesa gear, and if it was any other cab then a D800 would be a really tough option to beat. But IMHO pairing that cab with an Ampeg head is the no brainer. Seems as if they're designed for each other....

That Mesa D800 is getting a lot of recommendations

SVT CL dude! Heritage even better.

That said, I do like the GK stuff. With something like that I'd go for an old RB700 since you're already schlepping weight. I do like their class D stuff too and really want to try the MB 800 but I've got the original MB500 (i think it's 500? the gray one before they came out with the tube hybrid) and it's like a tank. No good reason to replace. I also like Genzler. I have an old Genz Benz and it's one of my favorites. A little too sterile and clean, but great for certain things. I know they started adding more character to the shuttle series and came out with other models and eventually sold out and started a new line. No experience with the new stuff but would try in an instant if my stuff were lost, stolen or destroyed. Mesa too. Had an M6 that I LOVED. Couldn't justify all the gear and sold it off but I miss that amp.

Oh! to be a young man again who thinks nothing of humping an 8x10 Ampeg fridge to a gig…

Congratulations! Lovely cab. Rock it for all it's worth. You are now a member of the Ampeg club and part of rock history. (Just take mind of your back!)

Had to have a FRIDGE ! its got wheels lol

 LOL! Well that's good.

Still…having wheels on won't help you much up a flight of stairs; or in and out of a van; or doing a dead lift up on a club stage or loading dock. I speak from experience. Oh boy do I ever!

And yes, everybody should own the fridge at least once in their bass playing career. Ain't nothing quite like pushing a bass through one of those monsters. Only thing better would be cranking it through two of them.

mow much money do you have and do you prefer tubes or SS? The mesa D-800 would work fine and it's only $699 and light in weight and I'n not a mesa fan per se. When you get to be my age though when you get finished lugging that thing around your nuts are gonna be at your knees LOL!!!! but don't feel bad I have an 88 lb tecamp 6x10 that very few in the states have and I'm keeping it. 1800 watts RMS baby!!! May end up matching it with a Crest prolie and some nice pre like a demeter. Right now I'm using a Bugera Veyron for it (father's day gift) and it's plenty loud.
