ive got 300 dollars what bass should i get?

Yeah- the Yamaha BB series basses are pretty good. I had a 614 (the active model) for about a year- excellent value.
You could also go with a Squier Jazz (CV or VM) to complement the P bass.

But if you go used and shop the TB classifieds, you'll probably be nicely surprised at what you can find for the same budget.

I'm just getting back into the music scene and I bought a bass for $250 a week ago--new.

Some of the other guys here definitely have it right: if you want the most value for money, get used. I bought new and ended up with an Ibanez Sound Gear SR300. It sounds nice, the neck feels awesome and it looks great. The tone controls seem pretty smart, too. My only real complaint about it is that the knobs don't seem exceptionally sturdy and the stratocaster-style jack seems ill-placed.

The Squier Vintage Modified with the soft maple
body. It is beautiful and sounds wonderful.

After tax, it will be right at $300. The Jazz is
$300 before tax,

Squier VM or CV, definitely best bang for your buck. Pawn shop near me has a used VMJ with the Squier logo sanded off for $220, played and sounded wonderful. If I wasn't saving for something else specifically I'd have brought it home with me.

Well, I was gonna say, there's a Peavey USA Millennium in the TB for sale section, for $300 but someone beat you to it. $300??? Really??? What a steal!!! So, I'll say, USA Peavey 1st choice, Squier VM or MIM Fender 2nd choice, Squier AFN 3rd choice, then upgrade electronics and PG, and have $$$ left over.
