First of all, I'm a Good 'Ole Boy. Grew up just down the road from Skynyrd, Hatchet, and those guys. My total heros...I love deep wanky clanky rounds on my PJ. I have a elementary/high school band background, so odd time signatures and counter melodies are intuitive for me.
So...for the third time, after a show, an audience member tells me that I have FUNK in my bass.

Years ago I was in a band made up of a white rhythm section and an African-American on keys and one on guitar.

We did everything from funk and soul to classic rock and country.

The keys player (and band leader.... and also a high school band director) used to tell people all the time that Skynard is one of the funkiest bands ever. He would even give examples of parts of their songs and then play a line from Earth Wind and Fire or The Commodores and show their similarities.

To this day that was one of my favorite bands. We're talking about doing a reunion soon.

In the meantime, Gimme Back my Bullets! I got to see Skynnyrd live at Missouri's version of Woodstock at the state fairgrounds in 1974. Heard "Freebird" before it began it's LONG journey through the airwaves and the set lists of so many bands...

Never.....rinse in cold water only or you'll remove all the funk.

Oh Yes ! The Little Red Hot Chicken, Jimmy Hall with his brother Jack covering the bass parts ! The most overlooked of the 'Southern Rock' bands from that time period.
