I've had enough!

...of g-string snapping at the bridge while slapping.

I've had them snap previously on my stock Stingray and now on my Modulus, with two different bridges, Gotoh 201 and Hipshot B-Style. Hipshot is a few weeks old and considering this had happened with 3 different bridges I don't believe it got anything to do with sharp burr on the bridge...

Granted I pop kinda aggressively, but I dont think they should snap on regular basis, especially as I've tried many different strings: D'Addario(don't remember which one), Sadowsky Blue Labels, DR Hi Beams, Dean Markley Blue Steels and Solid Bass, Rotosound 66 swing nickels and some GHS strings comes to mind.


Rotosound 66 swings stainless are only string that has not snapped even over long period of time. But they are very rough on fingers and I dont dig their sound too much either to be honest. Hi Beams lasted pretty long as well.

Any thoughts?

Sounds to me like you have a sharp edge on the bridge...and probably also need to examine your technique.

Here's an important note: If it has happened on more than one bass, it's not always the bass or the strings - it's the guy playing them.

How much of your finger are you using to pop? You shouldn't need much more than the tip to make the string smack against the fretboard. I second the fact that it sounds like it might be a technique issue.

Do you use regular gauge strings? The only time ive snapped a string was when i used a huge gauge and tuned it up too high.

Yeah... I've been gigging & recording slapping & popping since the mid '80s and have never snapped string... And I'm not particularly gentle about it... I'd strongly suggest you take a long look at how you play...

i found that one of my basses did it alot, and i gave the saddle a very light file with a small round file and it fixed it.
i have also had it happen when i have used cheap strings, and Chinese strings, not saying they are all bad, but from what i understand, if the core of the string is not very good, then as well as vibrations, odd noises, etc, they tend to break.

Well he said he's tried 3 bridges so far, so I don't think it's a burr.

Maybe try DR Sunbeams? The lower tension and round core may be more forgiving.

To elaborate further would be repeatitive.

Thanks for your input guys. Im sorta skeptical to comments regarding my technique, my strings never snapped on my Ibanez BTB or MIM Jazz... Meh, I think I gotta suck it up and stick with those Rotosounds.

Spanked today s**t out of my first bass, Ibanez Gio, no string snapping whatsoever.

Sound like the bridge is too high, resulting in too much of a bend in the string. Maybe you need to shim the neck so you can lower the bridge.

This sound like a valid point, I've always liked high action. I'll lower it and see if it helps.
