I don't mind exotic woods. I work with exotic woods and materials every day. I just prefer a more traditional looking bass. IMO, there are basses, then there is many stringED art. I'm not dissin the ERB crowd, it's just not my thang.

not sure if that is aimed at mine or not (problem with vague generalization)... but my basses are musical instruments / tools well before being art. I own them all for their playability & tone.

Like a few others have said, I'd have to say a Jazz or Precision in vintage three tone sunburst with a tort pickguard has a timeless beauty. I think I'd have to diverge a little and say a maple fretboard, though. Not to knock any of the custom works of art other people have posted, but to me there's just something perfect about the simplicity of a classic looking J or P.

I wouldn't say my Stingray is a contender for the most beautiful bass ever, but I absolutely love how it looks:
