Sorry, but I find what you said a bizarre comment.
Does that mean everyone making a funny face while holding a bass suffers from mental illness. Hope Jim Carrey never ends up under your care.
"How Bad" Jaco illness became was the way it had alienated everyone who knew and loved him so in the end, (1987), he ended up living in Holiday Park across the street from where his hand prints were cased in cement walking up and down Sunrise to bathe in the ocean. .... In 84/85, when this picture was taken, it was fan admiration that found Jaco hamming it up in front of the camera.

Thanks for the abundant supply of parade rain and wet blankets. I'm sure there's a million things on my TRIBUTE that one of these guitar demigods (The people who know) could say is inaccurate to the time and fabrication methods of the actual basses of that era. For instance, my bass lacks a strap button on the headstock, and I'm sure the decal isn't positioned exactly like the real deal. Like I told one other TBer who felt the need to remind me that this is not the real thing; it's a parts bass and I'm doing the best I can to pay tribute to Jaco via Kevin Kaufman. I'm not trying to make some sort of counterfeit bass and pass it off as something else. If I had deceitful intent, I wouldn't post this build on an open forum. So, I guess I will forever be labeled an imposter by "people who know"? I can live with that.

I agree about doing it right (or as close to correct as possible), and I've had tremedous help thanks to several gracious TBers. However, when one posts a critique that is dripping with disdain, helpful information comes off as rude. I also think it's funny how so many folks read this thread, and it wasn't until post 373 that anyone made a mention of the finish being "inaccurate".

Besides, I do think the edges were a deep dark brown. I will let you know when I get it back, next Christmas!

Bad news: he got the finish wrong. Fenders from that era had brown on the outside, not black. Also, they weren't very careful when spraying, so brown specs often made their way to the center(ish) part of the body. The custom shop even tends to get this stuff wrong (not sure why) so it's not that big a deal (to most), but people who know will spot it from a mile away. Sorry.

as for being able to spot it a mile away I think that is a poor statement... after all have you held Jaco's?? From any pics I have found it is almost impossible to see if it is dark brown or black, there is very little difference between these 2 colours...

and since you so kindly pointed it out and I have researched this with what you said in mind I cannot tell the difference between the 2 finishes... so i disagree with you. As you have told me of this "massive" difference I can now call myself "in the know" and I can't spot it a mile away!

Therapist. If you actually worked with persons who carry diagnoses of mental illness, you'd know that they too typically try to avoid the stigma normally associated with perceptions of their issues through humour as I did above...

One of the cool things about the forums here at talkbass (as opposed to the forums just about anywhere else on the Interweb) is that the discussions almost never devolve into conflict and personal attacks. I apologize if I flamed anyone. Colcifer is entitled to his opinion, and I do respect his input. It's just that the way it was worded, really torqued me. THand and many other TBers have given me many suggestions and critiques, but they do it in a constructive manner.

In closing, let's just drop it. I will just take it as his way of helping (pulling panties from my arse).

I've seen some vintage Fenders with brown edges, some with black edges. When I did the finish, I was looking at in image of Jaco's bass that looked very black on the edge.
