With all due respect Bo please spare us the Freudian Psychology and read the posts. I and many others simply said we are not fans of his music. Such a comment is a simple opinion, not a euphamistic statement of inner turmoil or grief. The simple fact is I don't like his compositions; never have, never will. This does not mean those who do are in any way deranged or idiotic and it is certainly not an attack on you or others who enjoy his music. Opinoins are statements expressing one's beliefs or emotions, not insults to those who differ. My or anyone elses opinions are not a symptom of a greater problem, just a matter of preference. If you are a fan, great; but please don't play the CD when I'm around because I don't like it. That's it.
I once read a quote which stated:

And uh... Jaco was the "best," wasn't he?
I do like all these, although my favourite is probably "3 views of a Secret" - the version on the Birthday Concert is great and I agree with Pete Erskine who says that it makes the hairs on the back of his neck stand up every time he hears it!
But I would say that I much prefer the "Mingus" version of "Dry Cleaner from Des Moines" - the bass playing is truly phenomenal in terms of note choices, virtuosity and sheer funkiness! But the horn arragments - by Jaco on the Mingus CD are just some of the best I've ever heard! "Shadows and Light" is great and different, but on this particular track you have to hear the studio version!!
i dont see too many people knocking Jaco's playing around here, even the cats who dont care for it.
Like Xavier said, he's not everyones cup of tea, his music is definatly not my cup of tea, but theres no doubt about it that he was a great bass player.
As far as him being the king or best ever on electric bass, thats pretty speculative, because there people like John Patitucci, and Rocco Prestoria, who can play exactly like Jaco, and possibly play a wider range of styles.
Ask the cats that truely know and comprehend his music- jaco opened the door he was an innovator. Rocco merely had a style. jaco was a genius. big difference.

From what I understand Rocco was one of Jaco's biggest influances, thats why I used his name. But I totally understand your point of view on this.
Just keying on the wide range of styles thing. Most of Jaco's influences played well in one style. Rocco killed at being Rocco... he's still the best Rocco around

I like Jaco. If someone else doesn't, I could care less. He's not the be-all and end-all of bass...nobody is. Why bother worrying about what other people think about YOUR opinions?

there is no way to judge the best bassist of all time.some people say that jacos the best, thats there opinion.but some people may not like him cuz he plays fretless.or some might not like him cuz he didn't slap much.just like the views on many other bassists.
i think this is a dumb question,but how did jaco(RIP) die?its really sad.hes definetly on my top 5 list of bassists.just wondering

Please, I love Rocco BUT he's definitely a one-style kinda player...
Now, Jaco? I'll cite you examples of Rock, Funk, Soul, R&B, Swing, "Orchestral", Latin, Free, "Avant", Experimental, Reggae, etc. He also mutated & crossbreeded any the above at will & in whatever kinda time or cross rhythm he so desired. Dave Holland is also doin' a great job of doing this kinda 'out there' improv-in & composing.
Patitucci IS quite versatile...I'm not recalling anything too "Avant" or Free, though.
Patitucci, IMO, is a helluva composer to boot. His first solo disc has some damn nice heads & grooves, same goes for the album that has "Spaceships", "Trane", & "Scofile"(I can see the cover, can't recall the title, though).
As far as Jaco's music, I dunno, "3 Views Of A Secret"...beats me how anyone wouldn't dig that composition.

...and the man could play a ballad like no one's business! How many ballads has Rocco ever played?

Jaco was murdered outside of a bar in Florida, he was beat to death. As far as his music and playing goes I love alot of it and alot of it is not my style. That does'nt mean I don't appreciate it. Even though Jaco had chops for days he was a great groove player and that is what he did most of the time.
