Jaco's '63 Jazz Bass for sell???

You're right man shouldn't have brought it up...

From what I read, and correct me if Im wrong but, this was a bass loaned to him for the taping of the videos, right? And the "collector" bought it for a large sum of money thinking that it was one of Jaco's most used basses when it was not, right? Maybe Im wrong and getting confused but, unless it was his bass of doom, I wouldnt touch it for anywhere close to that price, but that doesnt mean someone else shouldnt!

Why would any bass be worth anything to anyone that doesn't play any instrument?

One would be surprised at how many Fender J basses were/are parts basses.

Yep 3/4 of all of the ones that have owned were this way - and all for good reasons!

It should be in a museum so that little kids can see it and dream of growing up and lighting their guitars on fire...

I call foul on that one. The article not 2 months ago showed Jacos bass RESTORED and looked nothing like this. Also look at the grove in the body near the upper horn, thats a pick trough from a pick slapping against the body from years of play. And as far as I know Jaco never used a pick, did he??? I was just watching some Jaco vids on youtube the other day and most of the wear on the Bass of Doom was on the edges not the face if I recall correctly.

........ I was trying to make a point in the fact that some here have commented that its 'just a bass' etc etc to those that think its something different.....in other words, this bass means a lot to 'us' but squat to the general public......it was a reality check...man, excuse me....

Jaco is way too much of a 'subject' to even begin to talk about around here ... later....

Thanks but that site doesn't say anything about his Hartke Rig and his fretless Guild Pilot bass which he played in the mid eighties just before his death.

Your absolutely right. I saw the bass there too when I was a kid visiting 48th street. It was in a glass cabinet on the right as you walked in the door. I was probably 15 years old at the time and I didn't really know who Jaco was. I remember trying to understand why they were asking $5000 for something that looked like a piece of crap. I loved Rush at the time and was drooling over my first glimpses of a real live Rick. I think the Spector basses were hot at the time also.

Great memories. NYC and Times Square was dirty, smelly and loaded with porn shops.

"This reminded me of one trip I made into NYC about 15 years ago. I was in a shop on 48th Street called 'We Buy Guitars' (long since gone, unfortunately), and they were selling one of Jaco's basses! It was the one he used throughout the taping of the 'Modern Electric Bass' video (see 2nd picture). It came with the original rosewood board neck as well as the maple board Precision neck he had installed on it. It was behind glass, of course, and they were asking $5000 for it. I stood in front of it (drooling), figuing out how I could drum up 5 grand... needless to say, nothing came to mind. "

It is a known and well documented fact that Jaco owned more than one bass.

Since he died there have been lots basses attributed to Jaco. The documentation is more important than the instrument.
