Jam Pedals Lucydreamer Bass OD

Anybody play one of these? There isn't much chatter about them. I picked one up recently, and for those chasing the never-ending "light overdrive" thing, this one is worth a look. It actually has a huge gain range and a second switch to kick in the high-gain, so you can shred as well. Gets very synthy.

With the mix knob, it's simple to dial in "your bass, but with a little hair on it". The tone knob helps steer it in the right direction.

It's kind of Tube Screamer-y, but less midrangey than a TS. You'd never mistake it for a Darkglass product.

If you've ever played through a Fifth Gear (one of my favorites), at lower gain settings, you can get them to sound kind of similar, but you don't get the "blown-out tuba" quality of the Fifth Gear. Lucydreamer has more midrange and it grinds more, and longer. I don't know if it's a "one OD and forget the rest" pedal (is there such a beastie?), but like everything Jam make, it's very well thought out and high quality.

• TC Spark Booster
• TC Mojomojo
• EHX Bass Soul Food
• Keeley Super Phat Mod (uhh, what? I hadn't heard of it either. It was mentioned in a couple threads here and Keeley's a great company so I thought why not)
• Southampton Fifth Gear.

Overdrives are a dime a dozen, but these all are voiced differently, and the voicing is everything in terms of finding a "light overdrive" on bass that suits you.

It was a combo of the Jam Waterfall Bass and a Phase 95 in “45” mode. It’s nearly the opening of “Beat It”. Or “Cars” by Gary Numan.

Crap. I just had a drive go down with some of my examples on it. I sent back some of the pedals after recording them (Mojomojo, Keeley, Soul Food) and Phat Phuk B is being exchanged for one with the bias knob, so I probably won’t see that for a couple weeks. I still have the Spark. I’ll at least be able to re-do those and a Fifth Gear. I’ll figure it out.

Mojomojo was a cool pedal but I thought the overall tone of the overdrive got a bit mushy.

The Bass Soul Food wasn’t what I thought. I had heard a few demos that I liked, but when I got one in my hands, I thought it was a midrange machine (like a bass through a Klon) that lost all low end unless you blended only a tiny amount. Not my fave.

I didn’t get the Keeley Super Phat Mod at all. Did not retain low end and I didn’t like the quality of the drive. It was a bit spitty. I’m positive it is a great guitar pedal.

I was in the market for another fuzz, but now I kinda want a new OD. Same thing happened with your modulation thread @600 Ohms ! You're a bad influence on me!

I have no business or talent for making demos, but here are a few clips of the Lucydreamer, Spark and Fifth Gear doing Low Gain.

Even though it excels at medium or even high gain, it does a great version of the Spark Booster-type low gain. Spark and Fifth Gear can both get a little cleaner in terms of drive, but you can equal it with LD by keeping the mix knob in favor of dry, even though the gain is higher at its starting point.

Example, with gain at lowest setting, but mix around 8:30:

I picked up one of these. I compared it to a One Control Blackberry, the successor to the Bearfoot Blueberry, and an EHX Bass Soul Food. For my needs, the Bass LucyDreamer blows them both away. It's has a little more bite and clarity than the Blueberry without sounding harsh at all. The mids are slightly forward like the the others, but in a much more gentle and pleasing way. (The BSF was way to mid forward for my tastes.) Easily the best OD I've ever used. Also, the second gain stage can get you into mild fuzz territory. It goes as far into distortion as I would ever need. Overdrives are very personal. This one fits me to a tee!

I like the tone of the Lucydreamer the best of the three for sure. I've been sort-of regretting selling my 5th Gear, but that clip reminded me why I moved on from it, so thanks for that too!

Yes, couldn't agree more. A tiny roll of the tone knob, too, and you can control all of that mid-forwardness. It has the best usable gain range of any pedal I've used on bass, and so many ways to get a good tone with that mix knob. It should be a real sleeper for sure.

On the board are Lucydreamer and a Phat Phuk B. Between those, I get everything I want.

One more I found recently has made a trifecta: The Master Effects Super Three Hundred. The S300 does the SVT thing and is a great canvas for Lucydreamer and Phat Phuk B, all of which work in perfect harmony together. I finally feel settled, like I can produce any driven sound I desire.

It only effects the wet side. The dry side, controlled by the mix knob, is fully independent.
