Janky-A Rigs of Doom

Hey Bugeyed Earl, glad to see you and the Janky-A thread popping up! And I dig the old TKO 80. If those are your actual settings, I'm pretty sure I could relate to your "tonal ballpark."
I need to post a Jank update; somebody gave our guitarist a Behringer V-amp Pro (blue anodized rackmount guitar version) and since he is a full-throttle Line 6 enthusiast, he re-gifted it to me.
Damn, another rackmount thing. Now I need another, larger rack case.
But I have to say the guitar V-amp has some potential as a bass preamp. At the moment I am throwing convention to the wind and sticking it to the man by using the Roland JC120 model with the gain and mids up, and some onboard compression, and liking it a lot...although the Marshall Superlead 100W model sounds pretty P-bass-licious too.
Anyway, can you gig with that TKO in your situation, or is it practice only? Will it be Choad Hammer 2.0?

It does have the metal one, it's pretty unusual for me to find one with all the pointy bits intact these days. This amp is from 1982 according to the date codes on the pots.

Thanks Yella! I'm not sure how those settings will sound, that's where it ended up when I was figuring out what works and what doesn't. I was really hoping to find a Minx or maybe a Basic 40 to fill the Chodehammer-shaped void in my life, but this might work too. I pulled the pots off the board so I could give them a proper cleaning, and gave the jacks a cleaning. I'll see if there's anything I can do to improve the cabinet next, but don't want to disturb the lovely crust this one has going
I might have an opportunity to gig with it, just need to get it all back together to see how loud it will go.I wouldn't be surprised if your v-amp has some good patches in there, those things are pretty tweakable. I've been running a Peavey P. G. Raxx guitar pre in my main rack-based rig, I like it a little better then the Ampeg SVP. I just wish it had a balanced out.

I have the same one. I swapped the intact metal one from my own TKO 80 for the dinged-up plastic one on my less janky TKO 115 teal stripe.

I have never tried any of that era of Peav rack stuff...it's a one-rackspace high-gain preamp with a couple of horizontal 12ax7s in the back, right? I'd think something like that could do some cool rock bass tones in its lower gain ranges, particularly if it has active EQ.
I bought a Joyo JF-16 British Sound, thinking it might be a simple analog way to do what my Zoom does now: emit a low-gain Marshall Plexi sound of sufficient strength to max out my power amp.

The Joyo sounds good with bass or guitar, but it wants an effects return with further amplification downstream, or a mixer channel, or an amp input. Back to my laBORatory with the Joyo for more experiments...

I'm making noise about passing the 80 along to a kid just starting out, but I still have both at the moment. The 80 has the right shade of blue knob, but the teal stripe 115 sounds like my youth and gets me my pointy Peavey logo jollies in one manageable box. However, I do also have a Mark IV head (which really sounds like my youth), Century head (redone in RED tolex), and a rat fur cab with a metal grill and 400w 4ohm Scorpion 15. I should probably sell everything but the TKO 115 ... but what if I could just RUN IT ALL TOGETHER, BWAHAHAHA!
TKO 80 was my first real bass amp. BW15 loaded, it got the job done but was a heavy SOB.
Hey MBss, are you sure that BX15 Is 4 ohms? Maybe there were 4-ohm Scorpion 15s at one time, but I think they are all 8 ohms now.
Then again, I don't think you can get 4-ohm Scorpion 12 guitar speakers anymore either, like my Special 150 has.
Edit: disregard; looks like I was just unaware of 4-ohm Scorpion 15s. Looks like all the replacement baskets I see online now are the 8-ohm ones though. I wonder if Peavey still has the 4-ohm version tucked away somewhere now, or if you have to find used replacements?

So when you take every cab I didn't have a use for and connect them all to a power amp, this is what you get.

It's brilliant. Two reasons: (1) luck and (2) biamping. The waaaaaa comes out the two on the bottom and the clank comes out the big one on top. That is an 85-lb. guitar cab. Again, brilliant.

I was just trying to crush all the guitars in my band but when I added that 210 last night the sound changed qualitatively. Not just louder. I called it "authoritah" at the time, but it is doom. Doom.

You know what's super lame? I just got to play a 30-minute set with a super janky apparatus: a Behringer V-amp Pro (guitar version) driving a Crown Micro-Tech 600 power amp, both unracked but bolted together with short pieces of rack rail...powering my Audiokinesis Birdhaus cab. I did not get a picture of that for this thread.
I will have to stage a picture of it now. Dammit.
Worked great though. The V-amp's Roland JC120 emulation, speaker sim "off" and compressor "on", works great with a P-bass and 750 watts of bridge-mono mode wakes that Birdhaus right up!
The V-amp was free, and the power amp is older, weighs as much as the cab and therefore cheap.

I ran the bass version for several years in my home studio. It frankly was one of the best pieces of gear for recording both bass and guitar that I've ever had - far better than the Line 6 XT Pro rack I bought as an "upgrade" - and I may well get another one. The only flaw was that it was not proof against my dropping a screwdriver into it while changing the battery, which broke off parts of the circuitboard. Can hardly blame Behringer for that.
Someone gave this one to our guitar player and said it might be broken. The guitar player immediately re-gifted it to me. It worked but would not save settings. I popped the hood and saw that there was no battery in the memory battery holder (?). I turned it upside down, shook it...nothing. Replaced the battery and all is well. I like it! Navigating is a little more complicated than my Zoom B2 and the Zoom's line output is a little hotter, but on at least some of the sounds the Behringer is smoother, and certainly has a more subtle compressor.
Be careful with those older Crowns. If you happen to drop one, it will either sever a toe, or collapse into a singularity and consume anything within six feet of it. Ask me how I know...

no kidding! I thought the razor-sharp aluminum fins on my Peavey power amp's heat sink were something to be wary of. But this Crown has about 17 sharp, pointy corners on it. And it weighs as much as my cab.
I deleted the word "literally" from that sentence, even though that would have been a good place to use it.
The cab and the Crown each weigh about 35 lb., is what I'm saying.
