I was told mid-80's ('85 to be exact) and that would be consistent with the type of truss rod cover, V&T knobs, and P/U selector switch, as well as the gold Schallers. I think an earlier bass like this, as a top of the line Session model, would have had a carved wooden truss rod cover, which could have been one piece or a laminate. The fibre optics are original and unless something has happened to them recently, they should all work, though the ones closest to the headstock are harder to see, especially in normal light, in the normal playing position. I have seen other JDs with this (comparatively rare) feature and they are all more or less like that one.

According to John, this should be around '82 but he wasn't sure. He had an exchange of emails with Jaymi.

I watched a video about installing fiber optics on guitars and they should look brighter and more even all the way up the neck. I have no competence on the subject so I can't tell more...

Hi guy’s I haven’t posted for a while. I thought I would share this little humorous story. I’m sure most JD owners get the “what bass is that” :rollno: comment a lot, I know I do. This story however, gets a little beyond that and I thought was very funny.

I was asked to jam at a gig I was at with friends, the band was fronted by a local shred monster guitarist, a good 20 years my junior. This came about through mutual friends who knew I had my gear in the car. So after a lot of persuading as the music was not really my ganre and i dont like jumping in with guys i dont know, I agree to do a "few" numbers.

During the break I set up my gear. I open my case and pull out the Supernatural. The teen widdle demon takes one look and says. “F Me! That is the ugliest bass I have ever seen” :eek: which I kind of just swallow. :scowl: Sure the JD shape can be an acquired taste, and he is just a kid after all, but it did put my back up.

He then asks what it is, I tell him "It's Jay Dee".

His reply “never heard of it, But you have a killer amp, why don’t you get a decent 6 string bass"? :eek::eek::eek::scowl:

Now I’m struggling to stay calm, but, he is young, and I think, calm down, I have all said daft stuff in my time too.

As I glance off stage, through the loading door, I see his over the top, decaled van parked right against the door.

What is emblazened on the side but Toni Iommi’s Jay Dee SG floating over a background of flames in true clichéd metal style.:D

So I chuckle to myself, normally I would keep quiet, but he has been a bit of a p*ick , and I’m ticked off. I turn and say.

“I’m surprised you haven’t heard of JD, you have one printed on the side of your van”.

He says “what you mean, that’s Toni Iommi’s custom Gibson".

I said “no, it’s Toni Iommi’s custom JD.”

“No" he says, "it doesn’t have Gibson on the headstock cos that’s Toni’s custom logo instead”.

I take a deep breath savouring the moment.

“That’s strange, It looks like Mr Iommi and myself have the same custom headstock logo then”

His eyes fly to my headstock, and I see the confusion and subsequent shock of truth dawning on his face. But, being the nice guy I am, I let him down with the.

“very few people know that, don’t worry I thought it was a gibbo for years”.

I Played the whole set like a pro, even almost enjoying the mind numbing repetitive scales backing his preposterously self-indulgent 5min speed fest solos.
Got off stage. Went to the bar still wearing a huge win grin. Thinking to myself, I’m so glad I’m not young enough to know everything anymore.

2003 Custom MK III, with LEDS, Star Inlay, Custom short body and double PU on neck ! It was custom made for me, it has a plate with my name and serial number is my birthday date ! I sold it to pay my new house some years ago and I miss it so much !

This one is a custom wide body Jaydee that I bought from Alex Carter in London. It has a flamed maple top, binding, saturns inlayed, Leds on front and side. Sold to pay the new home ! I did not sell the girl LOL ! The guy that bought this gem just destroyed it when he relocated the neck PU 1" behind to easy slap !

Hi I would like to join the club too!
Here's what I purchased last week. Unfortunately somebody tried to install a xlr switch which is not connected to the preamp. According to John Diggins was the bass built in 1986 and it was him who told me that the switch was not installed by himself. Nevertheless the bass sounds and plays great. Maybe somebody could tell me what is the ideal pickup distance to the strings. I tried to put them as close as possible that the strings don't touch and the sound is still great. Would that be the right aproach of doing it?

I have seen that one before!!!! Welcome to the club here...I always set my strings as low as I can get them with the neck perfectly straight without hitting the pickups. To me it is hit or miss, in other words roll them down until you get them where you like them and go with it!!
