Jazz Fusion Standards??

Welcome to Talkbass, VoxPedro! :)

The thread you're responding to is almost three years dead now, so don't be surprised if the OP misses it. ;)

But my (mainly original) instrumental band has been looking for a few more cover ideas, so I'm glad you revived the topic.

We currently do:

Flood In Franklin Park
Red Clay
Cantaloupe Island

Thanks for the note of welcome. Always fun to think of new songs to consider or play. I new the thread was old -- interesting that it got a couple of nibbles, to boot!

I disagree about teen town.. And I think it is opposite of a standard highly calculated notes that are specific not jammable at all lol ... I purposely choose not to learn it cause of how useless it is IMO ...

It sounds like random notes to me ironically

And again key words "in my opinion"

Have any other simpler more common tunes in mind??

listen to BRIAN BROMBERG's version of TEEN TOWN on his release JACO.

it may make more sense.

Some Skunk Funk because it's in The Real Book for starters.
Some Skunk Funk - Brecker Brothers. It isn't exactly easy, but fusion isn't easy most of the time.

A bazillion years ago I learned "Some Skunk Funk" because I had heard a student ensemble nail it at a jam session when I was in high school, and I wanted to be ready if anyone ever called that tune. The number of times since when I've been in a jam session that had some horn players who knew the tune well (or could read the Real Book chart like mothrafrackers) can be counted on one hand -- one hand that was catastrophically injured trying to defuse an IED, mind you -- but when it's happened, man...the room just explodes with energy. Fantastic tune to blow on

...but not one I would expect to get called at an informal jam.

Man, I was weaned on these songs growing up. Some of these titles I'd completely forgotten about! Thank for the reminder. I have all that stuff still on vinyl and as a matter of fact, I pulled Brazilian Love Affair off the shelf just last week after not hearing it for what, 25 years??? "I C'n Hear That" from that album has one nasty, killin' bassline. It was like hearing it for the first time, now that I play bass.
