Fury USA + Foundation.. ---- you'd have both of both worlds and cash in the bank.

There are as few basses that are sweet deals (and appreciating) like the two mentioned.

I own several Fenders.. these aree not basses to mail order as they're all over the place.. in quality and finish..

My school's fender american precision sounds absolutely terrible. I played an identical fender american precision, and loved it. I own a Fender Jaguar that I love, tried one out at the store (wanted to play a sunburst one) and hated it.

If you're planning on buying new, then go used and buy one of each. You can find some great deals on used basses right now!

That's similar to what I was thinking. The OP said he wanted a USA model, so I would have suggested buying a MIM J and MIM P.

Or maybe even better, check out the Squier Vintage Modified P and J. Those Squiers get fantastic reviews from most people around here (subtle hint to do a search for "Squier Vintage Modified") and you could buy both basses *new* for less than the cost of a *used* MIA Fender.

No, I'm NOT kidding about the Squiers. A quick search should back up that suggestion.
